Hi-

I recently installed the JaS 10.4.8 release dvd on a fresh hard drive for my inspiron 8600. I'm currently running 10.4.5 on this box (on a different removable HD). 10.4.8 boots and runs and the QE/CI support with my nvidia 5200go is awesome but there are a few other things that aren't working:

ac97 sound

usb support

wifi (dell truemobile 1350)

onboard ethernet

This stuff all works in 10.4.5. I was wondering if anyone has any idea how, or what kexts to use to fix this stuff.

Thanks-

For the most part, the kexts that control alot of those services can be loaded from the 10.4.5 Extensions folder into 10.4.8 without messing things up too much. I would NOT, however, simply copy ALL of the Extensions over - just the ones you are having problems with.

I have also a inspiron 8600, and it was almost 100% working after install.

I used the JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.iso without JAS ppf patch (with patch, it ends with a black screen)

I have truemobile 1300 which didn't work this what i did:

I used IONetworkingFamily.kext and Wireless.Support.pkg from JAS 10.4.7 dvd.

1) sudo cp -r IONetworkingFamily.kext /Volumes/Macintosh/System/Library/Extensions/

2) sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions

3) kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

4) repair permissions via discutility en reboot

5) open systempreference > network > setup ethernetport

6) sudo cp Info.plist /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext/Contents/

7) install Wireless.Support.pkg then like 2,3 en 4 .....reboot

8) open systempreference > network > setup Airport

Hope this will help u

hi there Inspiron 8600 users. (I'M one too)

my experience -> Network i got working with an ionetworkfamily.kext from 10.4.7

sound -> found vendor and device id and followed the wiki http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Audio

when i used the patched dvd of jas the sound was working right away, but the screen went black after second restart.

wireless , only have the one built in from the Intel Centrino Technology , so far i think it's not supported.

grafik worked right away in the first unpatched jas release.

I'm an Inspiron 8600 user as well.

I'm on my 3rd or 4th iteration of OS X on my 8600. I've been fortunate that nearly everything has worked at first boot up. With respect to the latest JaS 10.4.8 DVD

Networking:

I did have to replace the ionetworkingfamily and IO80211 kexts (I'm using 10.4.5 versions)

I had to edit the plist file to include the pci id for my wireless adapter.

I had to perform the infamous "en0/en1 swap" in order to get my Dell 1450 wireless to work properly (at install it showed up as "on board ethernet").

Audio:

Worked at first boot-up.

Display:

I selected NATIT during installation. Using GeForce Go 5200 (64MB) with full-on Quartz/Core support.

USB:

No apparent problems.

Bluetooth:

Using a 3rd party dongle (chip vendor ID is Cambridge Silicon Radio)

Power Management:

I installed the powemangement.bundle from KeithPK. I've got the battery meter working, but not sure about other power management functionality. I tried to put my laptop to sleep but got a clean restart upon wakeup (pre-sleep state not maintained).

My key learnings:

Always back up existing kexts and bundles before updating.

Don't forget to set ownership (via terminal/sudo/chown) of newly-updated components before rebooting.

Don't forget to delete your kextcaches (extensions.kextcache and extensions.mkext in /system/library) before rebooting.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone-

I've gotten pretty much everything working with 10.4.8 since my original post. I reinstalled with the JaS final dvd, and I selected only "10.4.4" login window under the "Commonly Supported Hardware" (it's named something like that) menu option.

I copied a couple of kexts IONetworkingFamily and IO80211Family from my 10.4.5 install and networking works. Also I installed the PowerManagement bundle from the JaS patched dvd (it's not on the final for some reason) and got the battery meter working.

My problem now is that I have a new wireless AP which uses WAP and my wifi is now freezing every 10-15 minutes. I have to turn off the airport and turn it back on to get it working. I read on some other mac forums that this is a problem in 10.4.8, with some apple hardware. Anyone else experiencing this? Would the 10.4.7 kexts help or are they the same?

Cheers-

More wifi info

I still seem to be having wifi troubles with my Dlink wbr2310 in WAP mode.

As an experiment I installed the AirportExtremeUpdate2007001.pkg from apple. This package installs a bunch of stuff, includin a new IO80211Family.kext. Removing that and reinstalling my 10.4.5 IO80211Family.kext gets wireless working again but the problem of dropping off the network with WAS enabled is worse. Now I actually have to reboot to get back on the network, wheras previously I just had to power off/on the airport card via the toolbar. This sounds like the same broken behavior that some 10.4.8 users have reported on real macs.

In any event, I've fallen back to a simple 64bit pre-shared WEP key. Not terribly secure but beats an open network. This seems to work better but I haven't really been running it long enough to say its stable.

Hi all,

I replaced the ancient Cisco Aironet mini-pci card in my Thinkpad with the Broadcom equivalent of the Truemobile 1300. In Windows it works fine using the official Dell Truemobile 1300 drivers, but I'm having trouble in OS X 10.4.8. Is there any way to get the necessary kexts from 10.4.7 without actually downloading the whole DVD?

Thanks in advance.

Hey,

I also have an 8600 and the 10.4.8Jas disc and have been trying to install it however whenever I put the disc in my computer just kinda spins it for awhile and then moves on casually to booting windows. I'm guessing my dvd drive is a piece of {censored}. Anyone else have any idea of what could be causing this?

Without meaning any insult, are you pressing F12 at power-up to bring up the boot menu and then selecting to boot from CD/DVD? Otherwise, you'll likely just boot off your hard disk.

Yes lol. No offense taken.

I figured out my problem. Hopefully this will help someone else. It was indeed my drive being a piece of {censored}. Apparently it didn't like the disc being burnt to a DVD-R. I tried it with a DVD+R and it worked so yea. I hope that helps someone else.
