erbic
Back when I first got my MacBook Pro, I Boot-Camped Windows Vista onto it, and had it working fine, with some driver issues. Then I discovered Parallels, which was much better suited for the few Windows programs I would ever run. Or so I thought. So I deleted the Boot Camp partition. Now I've decided I don't want to go to my other computer in order to play Windows games on it. So I tried to re-partition the disk with Boot Camp, and it spat out the error that some files couldn't be moved. I've read that this can be due to volume fragmentation, and the ShowVolumeFragmentation utility I found online shows a fair amount of fragmentation. My question is: Is there a way to defragment the volume for free? I read that backing up to an external drive and restoring it from Disk Utility on the Mac OS X Install disc copies block by block, thus defragmenting the drive. However, I've done this twice. I haven't even run Parallels since my last restore, and one of my virtual hard disks is still very fragmented. Is there an easy way to do this without paying the £17.50 for a copy of iDefrag? I don't know what that is in US dollars, but I have very little money to begin with. Most of it's going toward paying my dad for this computer. erbic
Never mind; resolved the problem on my own. Turned out the problem was that I was telling Disk Utility to erase the target volume before restoring, thus causing a block-by-block copy. A file-by-file copy, accomplished by not telling Disk Utility to erase before restoring, would have been more favorable because it would eliminated the fragmentation of files. Thanks for all the help...
