I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.8 (JaS) on my notebook now and when I'm under Mac the harddisk gets very hot - well I can feel it and a temperature widget read 37°C.

I don't really feel comfortable with that because under Windows it runs way cooler then under Mac and I don't want the Mac OS to burn my harddisk down...

Anyone with same happenings? Any comment on temperature reduction?

You call 37°C hot for a hardrive ? it's not even warm.

Usually, standards HD in activity range between 38°C and 45°C. Below 50°C (depending on your PC case and airflow) is acceptable temperature. You should worry only if your HD temp is over 55°C.

I was thinking about this, perhaps it is not your hard drive you feel heating up, but the CPU? The CPU may be working harder if you are running a lot of PPC applications.

But I am quite new to this scene, so I may be talking crazy.

Have you checked where the CPU is in relation to the hard drive?

Maybe the widget or your windows utility is reading it wrong. Did you enable journaling while formatting? Because it would cause more hard disk activity. But after all, 37°C is really nothing to worry about.
