Vegas007
I didn't even think of it when I ordered my new system. I currently have the same copy of windows xp home I've had all along. Do I need to get 64 bit XP professional for my Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor to work? I'd hate to have to have to buy a retail copy.. argh Thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37740-do-i-need-64bit-win-xp-for-a-dual-core-64-bit-cpu/ Share on other sites
dponmac
no you don't need it, you just wont be able to use any 64-bit apps. NemesysSRT
And if you do run x64 you'll find that there are some of your x86 apps that will not run on it. All things considered, unless you really need the speed of x64, such as for an SQL server etc, IMO it is better to stay with the x86 system and maintain your compatability. Leethium
My uncle installed windows x64 on his machine but he didn't use it.. he had problems with some drivers and stuff like that. And all the tools he was using ran perfectly under 32Bit XP. br0adband
Funny, it runs everything I use and that's quite a bit of stuff. Go figure... But the simple answer (already provided) is no, you don't need a 64 bit OS just because you have a dual core CPU.
