Carrara and Bryce are different programs for different purposes. Carrara is a total 3D solution with vertex, nurbs and spline editing capabilities while Bryce is basically designed to produce photorealistic landscapes. Carrara also has terrain and tree editors and it is capable of producing procedural textures but these are not it's only features. Bryce can't be used as a replacement for the other. Nevertheless, I can tell from my experience that Bryce is better and easier to use in landscape visualisation. On the other hand, Carrara is very successful in raytracing, global illumination and non-photorealistic renderings.

Some years ago (like 1999 or so), Bryce was the only affordable product in it's category, but there are very good alternatives for it like Vue, Mojoworld and Terragen.

I've been using Carara for a long time, but I haven't done and needed many interactive renders (VET interactor) so I don't want to give misleading info.

As a last word, I can tell that Carrara is a pretty decent 3D program and I'd recommend it. If you seriously consider 3D, you should also learn Maya or 3D Studio Max. If you go on with Carrara for now, I recommend Hexagon for 3D modeling. It's 3D integration with Carrara is very good.

Edit: I've forgotten to mention Zbrush. Look at it, you'll be amazed.
