gabeoravitz
i had an installation of 10.4.8/8.8.1 running nearly flawlessly. all hardware working. however, the only thing is, in "about this mac" i always noticed that it showed twice as much RAM as i actually have. but Activity Monitor showed the right amount. i had 512, it displayed 1gb, so i added another 512, and now it shows 2gb. but after adding the 2nd 512, it seems that things are crashing non stop now. i dont know if it's coincidence or not. but it definately started after adding the additional 512. below is my hardware setup, and i have also attached an error report that was generated when firefox crashed. (though it's all applications that are having problems, not any one in particular) can anyone at all tell me what is causing this?? geforce fx 5200 qe/ci working with thico's solution msi kv8-max3 mobo all working (havent tried SATA tho) cmedia sound card working 1GB pc2700 RAM (showing as 2gb in ATM tho) amd sempron 64 3000+ cpu Untitled.rtf Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/36744-applications-crashing-constantly/ Share on other sites

wow
Sound like your memory is bad. A bit of static discharge and your ram can give some strange errors. Maybe you can let it check in the shop you bought it. or try to change som banks to pinpoint the 'faulty'ram Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/36744-applications-crashing-constantly/#findComment-261688 Share on other sites

gabeoravitz
does it seem like a module is doing it from what you can see in the log?? and what about how ATM always reads twice as much? even in the log file it shows a listing of modules and they're all double what they really are...but activity monitor gets it right... -TiLT-
quit all applications and use rember to check your ram, or do it with a bootcd/disk and memtest software to be sure. to speed up things with the memtest software take out the known working ram. jaminmc
Sometimes 2 different types of memory. IE different timings, don't mix well. This is because it puts 2 chips into one virtual one and you get twice the speed out of it.. Or something like that. So Memtest could pass both individually, but not together... gabeoravitz
yeah each module by itself passes the tests with rember. but all of them at once, it's failing. so problem solved. i guess. but what about ATM displaying the wrong amount? anyone know what's up with that??
