First of all, hi everybody as I'm new here (yeah, another n00b, start trembling!! lol)

So the other day I tried to install x86 in my laptop [Pentium M 1.4Ghz, 256MB ram] with no luck. I managed to install it successfully but the system kept on hanging up at boot (a "forbidden" sign appeared in the screen, above the apple sign).

I must say I hadn't really set anything up, just created a partition and started the installation process --I read something about people installing specific packages to make their gfx chipsets and cpus work fine, but I don't know how to do that, really. Is it possible that that's the reason why it didn't work?

Well, the thing is now I'm getting a new desktop computer. A Core2Duo E6400/1G RAM/Gigabyte P965-S3 mobo/Pioneer DVDRW/widescreen TFT (1440x900)/GeForce7600GS gfx card. I really wanted to try it out with MacOSX but first I wanted to know whether you'd think it'd work properly or not (at least the basic stuff: ethernet, sound, using my tft's native resolution and so on) as if I know it's not working from the start I'll avoid even trying. I'd also like to know whether I'd have to install any additional packages in order to make it work fine or not, and where I can find some info on how to do this.

Thanks a lot for taking your time to read this, I'm sure you'll be fed up of newbies like me all day asking for stuff! :thumbsdown_anim:

As far as I know, the 965 chipset has problems with OSX86. Get a 975 or 945. As for the graphics card, get a 256 MB version if you can, because the 512 MB versions have problems. Search for these in the forums. There's enough info on mobos and graphics cards in here. Look at the natit section for the GeForce.

Yeah, I'd second McSkywalker.

As for your laptop, thats probably a problem recognizing the IDE controller. You didn't offer many specs on it, put there is a possibility you could use that.
