juantom
Installed on Friday using the phenix .dmg, converted to ISO and patched with the Generic dvd patch (that was alot of md5 checking). Machine would boot with original dvd, but would halt at grey screen w/ the apple logo, showing a circle with a line (like no smoking, no parking). Installed fine (took forever), GigE worked off the bat, but no QE or CI, also no sound. Used the kext package for i945 chipsets (search for 945, look for "i945 chipset working" and on the last page there is a link to the package.. Thanks to everyone on that thread who did all the hard work). Now I have QE, CI, sound (2 channel, havent tried input but aforementioned thread indicates it's a no go). Every program i have tried works, which isnt a huge list, but: spotlight, dashboard, iTunes, terminal, vlc, safari, firefox, iTattle, system profiler. Asus P5LD2-VM (i945, should have GMA950, manual says 900, but i think thats a typo) Celeron D 2.53 (sse3 and EMT64) I will update this as I add more programs and test my dvd-burner (sony dru-510a, recognized, system profile says it supports dvd burning but has not been tested) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3576-asus-p5ld2-vm-working/ Share on other sites
would_pay_for_mac_on_x86
wow, thats great. this is a sister of one of the best overclocking mobos on the market, the P5LD2 Deluxe: http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=439&p=1 i am not sure how they totally differ...i think the deluxe has special heat sinks instead of fans on the mobo...and lack of GMA900 i think...but have you tried overclocking? be curious if the line in works too... would_pay_for_mac_on_x86
hmmm... i checked it out... apparenly your "VM" model has the Gigabit Ethernet, while the "V" model, P5LD2-V has the special heat sinks for overclocking and silent use with no fans... ("Stack Cool 2") ...and GMA950, like yours, but no GigEth. The "Deluxe" is cool with eSata (external), but unfortunately doesnt have GMA950.. so the ideal unit is either yours or the VM model if you want to OC. i might just order the VM model now. Does this need DDR2 RAM or can it use DDR? I've heard that DDR2 can actually be slower and more $$ but I don't understand yet... i just noticed this is ICH7 not ICH6, I guess those 945G Kexts are necc to make this work? Are these the package of kexts you need? Can you tell me exactly which ones in the package were neccessary and did you have to edit them? http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...pic=2243&st=100 Are you having the same probs as the others are having?: - VLC reverses video - Quictime HD is a problem - Screensaver locked to Flurry Here's the link to the VM overclocking model. With this and a 3.0Ghz chip, I bet at least 4.0Ghz is possible. With a 3.6Ghz chip, maybe 4.6Ghz?! http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=...575&modelmenu=1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3576-asus-p5ld2-vm-working/#findComment-22972 Share on other sites

juantom
Hey guys, Sorry for no replies, but I had a long weekend away and have been inundated with midterms this week. After 3pm tomorrow I'll post more info if it is necc. About the mobo- It has no fans on the mobo, and even boasts on the heatsinks about "zero noise, no moving parts" I have not tried overclocking. I come from the AMD side of the camp and am not familar with the overclocking proceedures on an intel proc (bios is sort of universal, but multiplier unlock options, etc) so I havent even tried to overclock--- I have recieved boot error messages saying the overclock failed.. so i just reset the settings. At some point I will try to overclock, but OSx86 is perfectly fine for the tasks I ask of it (Adium doesn't really take much, now does it) ddr2 ram only, the sockets are 240 pins (i think) and ddr is just 180 or so pins...whatever the specific numbers are, they arent the same. I have 1gb via 2x512 of corsair valueselect, which came in a kit. The ram is of the 667 spec but only being run at 533 because of the celeron processor. I got the faster ram (and the 775 socket) for future-proofing. OK, now for all of the install-related questions. I used the phenix .dmg file, i beleive marklar-tiger.dmg or something. I burned that dvd after converting to ISO and tried booting.... no dice. The boot screen would stop at the grey logo with the international no symbol thing (like no smoking, no parking,no hamburgers, i dont know what it is called, but it needs a name). I should have done a -v at boot but instead found a Generic Patcher which was about 200mb (170ish i think). The file contained some good instructions on patching the dvd, doesnt take too long, but you do have to check alot of md5 sums, so not really a good thing to be doing at 3am like i was. Burned that patched dvd, booted the machine, and followed the installation...the pathcer changes the instal options and text slightly, so make sure to read everything. Then OSX booted up fine.. no sound, CI or QE. I followed this thread: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...pic=2243&hl=945 and had QE, CI and 2-ch of audio, in about 5-10 minutes. (if you dont know how to use the command line, at least figure out that tab will auto complete what you are typing...play with it a little, it saves so much time) I haven't had any issues with this mobo or combination, but I haven't tested much either thanks to my hectic schedule... If there are things you'd like me to test out or figure out, post them here and i'll go over them tomorrow or on the weekend. tom Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3576-asus-p5ld2-vm-working/#findComment-23416 Share on other sites
Mr. Blonde
This is what I did already: .dmg -> .iso Installed Generic patcher The dvd boots perfect but it doesn't regonize my SATA hd (ICH7) Can any one tell me witch kext I need to add to the dvd? would_pay_for_mac_on_x86
great, thanks tom when you get a chance, can you please test to see if you are having the same problems as the others in the 945G thread, namely: 1) VLC reverses video 2) Quictime HD is a problem 3) Screensaver locked to Flurry 4) Sound input doesn't work do you see any mention on your board or manual about "Stack Cool2"? apparently they have heat sinks on the REVERSE side of the mobo. From ASUS website: "Stack Cool 2 is a fan-less and zero-noise cooling solution offered exclusively by ASUS. It effectively transfers heat generated by the critical components to the other side of the specially designed PCB (printed circuit board) for effective heat dissipation. The result is a temperature decrease of up to 20 degrees celsius! " do you have a link where you bought it? It's good you got the better RAM for future proofing.... But honestly, that mobo is so flexible that you could easily set a CPU:RAM 4:3 divider or so and be good to go probably up to 3Ghz on any ram. just seems like a shame to have that mobo and not give it a shot...even on stock cooling, to see what its got. with that divider set, i would hope that the CPU would be what holds you back, not the mobo...given its good reviews... would_pay_for_mac_on_x86
any news on whether there are overclocking options for this mobo, or any of the questions above? still liking this mobo? juantom
The overclocking options are pretty good, contain the normal options plus some sort of option for 5,10,15,20,25,30% overclocks where the system adjusts the parameters for you. i cant clock more than 15% and boot, so im sitting at about 2.8ghz now. board is nice, issues with ATA controller, im thinking of fixing it but I dont want to break the system. oh well, i'll have to use knoppix to fix it if it breaks bad. more on that, i just can't deal with the 100% cpu load during my 2mb/s disk access Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3576-asus-p5ld2-vm-working/#findComment-25319 Share on other sites
would_pay_for_mac_on_x86
hmmm whats up with that? thats no good. i think that slowdown means you are in PIO mode vs UDMA did you try adding in that PIIX or whatever driver? juantom
a reboot with the -f flag solved it, but it breaks after every reboot. good thing the machine is stable enough that i dont have to reboot. Now i have 30mb/s instead of 2. Much better. Now i just need to get printing to work, my scanner, and see if i can get my TV card to work... Printing shouldn't be too bad as I have a CUPS server on my linux box. Hopefully Apple bundled some generic post (ghost) script drivers in here.... Scanner I hope will work but I'm not too optimistic (canon lide 35 or something, I use it so I dont have to spend $1,500 on textbooks....) TV card would be excellent but I feel is the least likely to work. I know there is support on linux for it, but I also know that Mac OSX isnt linux... so I'll look into it. I'd be surprised if there had been no work on previous macs with PC tv cards. z_one
Hi guys, I'm running a system with the following specs: Motherboard: Asus p5ld2-vm CPU: Prescott 3.0 (P4 630) Ram: Kingston DDRII 533, ValueRam 2x512 (CL: 4) Power Supply: Generic 350W The problem is I can't seem to be able to raise my FSB over 225 ! Whenever I hit 226 my system simply refuses to boot. I have tried increasing RAM voltage to 1.9 but I get the same results. And I don't want to fiddle around with CPU Core voltage yet because I'm still using Intel's stock heatsink (planning on getting the Thermaltake Silent Water soon). What do you think my limiting factor is ? I heard the Asus p5ld2-vm and the Prescott p4 630 both overclock very well. Can it be my PSU ? Or is it my Memory ? Thanks. would_pay_for_mac_on_x86
hi can you guys please do me a favor? and test these 2 things 1) test if iDVD works. 2) check if these 2 particular quicktime videos play OK without the green/purple psychedilic problem: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/ice_age_2/medium.html http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchli...son/medium.html ( see full thread here: http://forum.osx86project.org/lofiversion/....php/t4211.html ) thanks... btw, i've had similar probs not being able to OC an MSI 945G board 1mhz above 216FSB...on an ice cold chip...and a quick search shows many are having the same prob as you on your mobo... The board in my sig won't function at ALL above 216, and it hard locks constantly above 200 if you have PCI cards being used. I'm selling it for anyone who wants a board that works but can't overclock (stable at stock speeds at least). So if you want to run (read overclock) your system, don't get the MSI 945G stuff (at least os x works lol). Also, 10.4.3 just sort of works 'out of the box' with all the onboard stuff on most 945 systems, although some sound chips have better luck than others.
