MacNB
Recently bought a Dell S2721QS - 4K UHD. Seeing an annoying problem with Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey on my Legacy BIOS Dell 530 (multi-boot on this system). The Login Screen's resolution is "1920 x 1080" Retina and then changes to 2550x1440 after logging in. GPU: RX 460 Boot loader: OC 0.8.7 with screen resolution set to MAX and UIScale=1 Boot Picker resolution = 3840 x 2160 1st Stage boot loader resolution = 3840 x 2160 2nd Stage boot loader resolution = 1920 x 1080 (Rendered while Monitor resolution = 3840 x 2160) Login Screen resolution = 1920 x 1080 (Rendered while Monitor resolution = 3840 x 2160) Desktop resolution = 2560 x 1440 (Rendered while Monitor resolution = 3840 x 2160) Things I tried to workaround on Big Sur: Changed desktop resolution to 3840 x 2160. No joy - same issue ❌ deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist & Restarted. No joy - same issue❌ Turn OFF the Monitor, wait few seconds and switch it back ON. No Joy - same issue❌ Login and Logout. Now screen resolution is the SAME as Desktop. Joy - but crazy work around✅ Changed UIScale = 2. 1st stage loader res=1920 x 1080. No Joy - same issue❌ Tried different Model ID instead of iMac14,2. No Joy - same issue❌ On Catalina & Monterey, same as above except: Turn OFF the Monitor, wait few seconds and switch it back ON. Joy. Now screen resolution is the SAME as Desktop - but crazy work around✅ So the problem starts at the 2nd Stage loader which switches resolution to 1920 x 1080 rendered. Why ? Where is this 2nd stage or Login screen resolution setting stored ? Anyone else seeing this issue ? Interestingly, this problem does not occur if I boot Sierra where both 1st & 2nd stages are 3840 x 2160 after after login desktop resolution is 2560 x 1440. See pics below. Boot picker: 1st Stage loader: 2nd Stage Loader (switches to 1920 x 1080 rendered and NOT native): Desktop setting:
FirstTimeCustomac
I've been fighting the exact same issue. Well, at least I don't see the second stage loading screen anymore and boots right into desktop without a blink by adding a boot-arg. But, I too wish to know if there is a way to change that default resolution tho.

But that boot-arg's purpose is to fix black screen issue that does not stop 2nd stage loading bar. If your is not showing then you have a different problem. For me, it does not show 2nd stage loading. As described, it boots right into desktop or login screen. I don't see it as a problem. Without the boot-arg, I do see the scaled 2nd stage loading screen.
