Ok, I got OSX working, everything but the networking (wired and wireless), i'm using the 10.4.6 version

My specs are as follows

HP NW8000 (supposedly linux ready)

Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz SSE2

512MB RAM

ATI Mobility FireGL T2 128MB

40GB HDD

DVD/CDRW

Broadcom Netxtreme Gigabit (DevID 165E VenID 14E4) Not sure of the series 57xx or whatnot

HP WLAN W500 802.11ABG (DevID 0013 VenID 168C) < I'm thinking this is the atheros people are talking about, not sure though

HP Bluetooth device, worked perfectly from the start

So here is my problem, the network card seems to be recognized, but I cant connect to the internet, or get an IP from my router for that matter, I even tried entering it manually, IP, Subnet, Router Address (not sure what to put for DNS, left it empty), but that didnt work either. Dont know where to go from here.

My other problem is that my wireless card isnt even detected, so I cant connect wirelessly to anything, i've looked around for some ideas on what to do, but maybe i'm just somehow missing the thread in this forum that solves it? if anyone could help me out, or point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

I cant seem to get my wireless card to be found

all in all, i'm frustrated right now and i'm gonna give it a rest for a few hours, read all the threads and posts that you told me about rammjet and followed the instructions I figured pertained to my situation, but still nothing. I dont know what to do now.

Well, I had this same problem for a LONG time with my router, and I spent SO long trying to figure it out, until I found it it was a problem with my Linksys Router. Basically, their firmware wouldn't assign OS X an DHCP IP Adress. However, since then, they have released a new firmware, 1.01.1, that should have address this issue. Also, this issue was ONLY in their 1.01.0 driver, so another method would be to downgrade to 1.00.9. To do this, I talked about it HERE: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=31880&hl=

But, I suggest getting on Linksys' site and download the latest firmware for your router and installing it.

Hey, this is all under the assumption you use the same router as I, because what you described is EXACTLY the same thing that was happening to me... Let me know if yo DO have a WRT54G like me, and if this works. Good luck.

I have a WRT54GS V5 and it has the newest firmware, it could be the problem, if I power cycle the router while the laptop is connected to it and OSX is up and running, it will give me an IP, albeit one that I cant use, it gives me

ipaddr: 169.254.138.220

subnet: 255.255.0.0

but at least its something

The router doesn't assign that IP. That is one the computer assigns when there is no router (when it is off). And yes, it is worthless.

Why not set the IP manually for the ethernet. Just pick an unused IP in the range the router would normally assign. Set System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet card -> TCP/IP to Manually with DHCP and enter the IP. It should then find the router and fill in the rest. If it doesn't, try going with Manually and fill in the data yourself.

Well, I am almost positive it's a Router problem, as Linksys has had problems with this with the WRT54G, and apparently they haven't fixed it yet for the WRT54GS... the WRT54G only got fixed several weeks ago.

But yeah, I would suggest trying to find older firmware for your router, and trying that. Try like one or two versions in the past.

I have tried filling it in DHCP with manual address AND totally manual, still doesnt work. So my next train of thought is that maybe OSX is loading the wrong driver or something, and its not communicating with teh router at all, or anything for that matter.

Is there some sort of "hardware profiles" in osx like there is in windows?

Oh, and I cant downgrade my firmware because there were issue's with it disconnecting for no reason every once and a while and I would have to power cycle it, the new firmware prevents that from happening, which also , i have read on other forums, seems to be prevent OSX from getting a DHCP IP, but other people have been able to assign a static ip and have it working, whereas I cannot, so I figure mine is a driver issue of some sort. So I'm wondering is there some sort of "hardware profiles" in OSX like in windows?

Edit: I got it to accept a manual address, and subnet and router address, but still it cant connect to the internet, plus nothing shows up in the router logs, so I think its a driver issue

i've changed my router firmware to a version of dd-wrt, which up until today I didnt think was possible because everyone said v5 cant use linux based firmware, anyways, I now have internet access when wired, which is awesome, thanks for all your help guys, now I just have to work on getting wireless working and i'm set. again, thanks for your help AND patience.

Yeah, I guess this would work too... I just didn't feel like messing with that in case I brick'ed my router :P. But I am glad you got it working. Linksys really needs to figure out how to fix their DHCP servers on their routers :D.

This pretty much was my only option, the older versions of the linksys firmware had problems with bit torrent connections, they would constantly disconnect from the internet, so i decided to risk bricking, and I like dd-wrt, has some nice options that i didnt notice were in the linksys firmware.
