vEmpire
Hi, I was at the local compusa this evening (hey, it's next door to the target my wife was going to)... and saw a toshiba satellite P105-S6104... This page on their website has some info... Anyone have thoughts on if this would be a reasonable laptop to try and run an OSx86 system. I'm presuming I would need to futz with the wireless, but is there anything else that spells big trouble here? There is also a P105-S6114, which has more ram, and a bigger hard drive down at my local fry's for only a few bucks more... I found the specs on the Toshiba website and would go with this one if it's going to be a better experience. thanks! joe75
Its not bad, almost the same as my E1405, but the there is no mention of the network card. If you don't care about the 17" screen you can get a E1405 w/ T5600 for $799 on sale now from Dell. vEmpire
I admit it, I'm all about that big screen, I think I would put the triger on a macbook if it had something other than that 13" inch screen. I can't make the leap cash wise to the 17" MBP or I would just do it and be done with it, but you know 3K is twice what I can afford and I'm NOT going (further) into debt to get a new laptop. The network card is definitely an Intel, I looked in system info, but I can't remember the exact details. I know the 3945ABG wireless is a no go, I presume I can either pick up a USB wireless card, or can I replace the internal one simply? That would be ideal if not too expensive. Thanks for your feedback, I'm hoping to get decent solution. By the way, I lived in Rochester for a few years, working for Xerox, just left there in 03. joe75
By the way, I lived in Rochester for a few years, working for Xerox, just left there in 03. Rochester Rules The E1405 is 14" and 1440x900 and a little lighter and has tremendous battery life, plus you'll save $350 to get your wife something from Target Everything works except sound, soon to be fixed *crossing fingers* To tell you the truth Toshiba's have lots of RMAs, my mother works for a factory repair/warranty center and tells me how bad they suck. Good Luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34707-would-this-be-a-good-machine/#findComment-246266 Share on other sites
vEmpire
Any other opinions on these two possible choices? As far as wireless goes, is it a trivial matter to get a supported USB wireless adapter? I see the belkin F5D7050 has been used in the past, are there other USB solutions I should look into? A particular replacement internal card I should consider? thanks.
