Hervé 2,093
@BuXb, Apple no longer provide standalone incremental or combo updates for download. So you won't find any for Big Sur. You either update from the PrePane or download the latest full installer package through AppStore; that's it. You can look it up if you want. If you want links, look here. m88asiasport
BuXb 86
@Hervé whaaaaaooooot? So if one has several Big Sur Macs to update, either each has to dl the update, or one has to dl the full 11.4 GB installer for offline update? And that with each update???? Arent't we all supposed to minimize web traffic so save some energy, and Apple agreed to that, too? In this context, two questions, if anybody knows (I don't have enough time these days to be fully in the loop on these things): Has Apple issued a sane (or not so sane) reason for that? I'm aware of the Intel/ ARM M1 fork, but that would just mean two different incremental + 2 different combo updaters. Somewhere someone posted a direct dl link for the full 11.2 installer directly from an Apple server. So it appears there is only ONE UB installer for BOTH archs, Intel & ARM M1? Or are they different depending on if, via App Store, I download from an Intel or from an ARM M1 Mac? Edited February 2 by BuXb m88asiasport
Hervé 2,093
As I said, you can look it up but, in a nutshell: articles I read suggested that Apple made this choice in order to reduce web traffic by offering a single package rather than 3 and thereby aimed to reduce downloads. Not seen anything more official to date. yes, every Big Sur update now triggers a 2GB download and, yes, the only alternative is the 12GB installation package for offline update/upgrade. last time I saw incremental Big Sur updates was with beta versions (up to beta #6 from memory) and there were issues (downloads and installation failures). I suspect Apple may have had unresolved problems with their servers and/or (bugs) with incremental updates installation rather than an actual desire to reduce Web traffic; it couldn't be a total surprise, Apple having been pretty good with bugs in recent months but it's my own private speculation... Sharing PrefPane offers a Content Caching option that may be used to share software updates/installation packages with other Mac computers. I guess that Administrators would be invited to use this to update their equipment set rather than perform individual downloads on every Mac. of course, there is only 1 x universal Big Sur installation package. Big Sur brought back "fat-binary" code if you want, just like in the good old days of Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion when we had PPC and Intel code or i386 and x86_64 code. Only kernels are specific. It's not within the DNA of Apple to offer separate binary builds for different architectures: admin@E6230 ~ % lipo -info /System/Library/Extensions/pthread.kext/Contents/MacOS/pthread Architectures in the fat file: /System/Library/Extensions/pthread.kext/Contents/MacOS/pthread are: x86_64 arm64e admin@E6230 ~ % admin@E6230 ~ % lipo -info /System/Library/Kernels/kernel Non-fat file: /System/Library/Kernels/kernel is architecture: x86_64 admin@E6230 ~ % admin@E6230 ~ % lipo -info /System/Library/Kernels/kernel.release.t8020 Non-fat file: /System/Library/Kernels/kernel.release.t8020 is architecture: arm64e admin@E6230 ~ % admin@E6230 ~ % lipo -info /System/Library/Kernels/kernel.release.t8101 Non-fat file: /System/Library/Kernels/kernel.release.t8101 is architecture: arm64e Edited February 10 by Hervé Corrected the 12GB typo for download m88asiasport and BuXb
BuXb 86
@Hervé great reply, learned a lot, thanks for taking the time. Just: Quote every Big Sur update now triggers a 12GB download hmm, are you 100% sure? Isn't 11.1 -> 11.2 = 3.25GB? At least that's what the Software Update Pref Pane says. It'll still take me a few days until I want to update, but I'll sure save the content of /Library/Updates before it gets emptied again at the end of installation, and share the size. What I'll also try is save that folder, then try use it to update my backup Big Sur 11.2 Beta install. m88asiasport
