What's the chipset of that old dongle? Or it's PCI id shown in SystemReport->USB section? Given its age, v1 model may not be supported but, depending on the identified chipset, @chris1111's wireless driver package may answer your prayers.

 

chipset is Atheros AR9271

Yes, is hard, but not impossible. That has been my problem for some time now. I also have a TL-WN722N card and no working kext. So I decided to at least try to build one.

So far, I managed to detect the card and show it in system preferences, but it is detected as a WIRED ethernet card. If you want to keep going with the work, here is my github files. 

I have started tis project several times from scratch, so, any help would be great.

I have also another version of this project called CleanAtheros that is mainly for older macs, I am building it on Yosemite.
