Try scanning using the Daisy Disk application or the like.

This application is very good to be used to view large files stored on a mac. And we can delete it ourselves.

Native Method to Free Clean Up Mac Storage

●     Go to the Downloads folder, trash the unneeded files, then empty Trash.

●     Navigate to your Macintosh HD and remove duplicate files.

●     In the Mail app, go to Mailbox Erase Junk Mail. Then go to Mailbox Erase Deleted Items to remove the email permanently.

●     Move files from Macintosh HD to an external storage drive.

●     Compress your files to save start-up disk space.

Other than that, download and install the 30-day free SpeedUp Mac software on your Mac. You can easily clean up System Junks, Logs, Leftovers, Trash and extensions without software activation.

There's a section called "purgeable space" on apfs volumes which cannot be deleted easily by the user. The easiest way I've found so far is to download a demo of CleanMyMac and find the feature under Maintainance and delete it that way.
