i'm wondering is there an alternative?

No, I'm afraid not, if you're using RA files. If you have RealPlayer for Windows, you can spend $20 (like I did) to convert them all to MP3s. If you do that, then iTunes (PPC), Windows Media Player (PPC), RealPlayer (PPC) and QuickTime Player (Intel) will all work. There are countless others out there that work too; those are just the ones I'd recommend.

Also, you'll eventually get used to the slowness. iTunes, however, is definitely not unbearably slow.
