does osx need to be on first partition

No, Osx can be on any partition. The most important thing is that the Osx partition should be actived and bootable.

I have a multiboot system ( windows xp, windows 7 and osx from lion to mojave).

I'm using Enoch bootloader , but you can use clover as well.

Windows should be on primary partition, osx don't requires primary so it can be installed anywhere.

 This is if you use MBR/legacy like me.

If you use GTP scheme is more easy.
