xroot2000
Hi Guys, Does anyone knows which version / distribution of osx works with a Asus p5vdc-mx motherboard? I've tried the Mac-OS-X-10.4.7-AMD.Intel-JaS (repack) distribution, but it hangs during the dvd bootup. The symptoms look likes this threat : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...amp;hl=p5vdc-mx Thanks ! Detosx
I don't know if my motherboard is a relation to yours but I have had no luck getting my Asus P5VD2-MX Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 to 'see' either of the Sata hard drives that I have tried. The VIA chipset is listed on the Wiki as working, albeit that mine ends with the letter A. I am also expriencing problems with a non Sata hard drive. The install to an initially FAT32 active primary partition modified in disk utilities to Mac extended journalled doesn't boot up. I just get a darwin loader reboot loop. That's the short version. Slightly longer version is the install the first time seemed to go well but then crapped out saying there was no keyboard connected, when there was in fact the standard issues Apple usb one. I then tried installing a second time but without the usb repair patch. I fell asleep during that install and awoke to find my computer in a reboot loop, had been doing so for hours. Took out the DVD but still that reboot loop. Very frustrating. Processor is Pentium D 2.8 DVD burner is the Pioneer PNY Gefore 7300 graphics card 1Gig 533 memory. I have tried a Western Digital and a Seagate Sata Hard drive and both are invisible to both Jas 10.4.8 and to Linux install DVD (suse). There must be a lot of other users out there who were seduced by the price of my MB. Any pointers or suggestions would be hugely welcome. Feel like I'm running out of bios variations to try! Detosx
A break through! Though Sata still isn't recognised, the most recent ppf patched JAS 10.4.8 AMD/INTEL install DVD installs without a hitch to my non Sata Maxtor 160gig! I doubt the onboard graphics card chip works well but I use an entry level nvidia graphics card. Everything just works, fast and fluid. Now to sort out sound! Thanks go to MonsterElmo for messaging me. I was going to try installing the new JAS on this rather neglected computer today anyway but his email was very enouraging, where I might have given up after a few tries; joyously it worked on the first go. We wait to hear of anyone who has got Sata working with this motherboard. geshadow
Hi Detosx, Not sure if the board you are referring to is the P5VD2-MX or P5VDC-MX? But I would agree with you getting SATA to work (my drive 260G Western Digital). Anyways, today I made a break through actually got the SATA drive to be seen (for the P5VDC-MX version 1). Funny enough I needed Vista to actually do it (Knew it would be good for something (;p) ) For my board the address I needed to use was 0x33491106. I found that the WinXP Pro lies about the ID stating 0x33091106 WHICH DOESN'T WORK! So you can either edit the AppleVIATA with 0x33491106 or 1. If Vista is installed click the properties on the VIA SATA Controller (I believe thats what it was) and then details. 2. Select Hardware ID in the drop-down and follow the same you, me and many other people have done a million times LOL And I agree the onboard video, not going to happen. I prob break down and get the entry level card at some point. I still haven't gotten the VIA AC97 sound working, the ID is correct, but after checking the Extensions it gives an error in the driver. Hope this helps, it would be nice to contribute something since so many on here has helped me get going! PS. Please post if you do find a way of getting the sound to work and if you happen to have an idea how to modify the Jas 10.4.8 SSE2/SSE3 DVD so that we can install to the sata from the disk. Detosx
Hi Geshadow, no I have the P5VD2-MX, which I think is similiar to your motherboard, or at least doing a search on these boards some months ago it was the closest I found to finding someone who owned my motherboard. I'm not sure I understand the procedure you are detailing, could you elaborate a bit. In terms of sound, buy a usb sound card. I splashed out £50 on a good one because I place a high premium on good quality sound. I can give you details if you like. It would be great to hear any more details. I then upgraded using JAS 10.4.8 Combo Update and everything was good The Patches needed for Sound and Ethernet are in the Wiki / Motherboard Section Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/32892-help-with-asus-p5vdc-mx/#findComment-289558 Share on other sites
geshadow
Hello Detosx, All, Sorry, have been working on another project. The following is what I did to get my WD 250G drive to be seen in OS 10.4.8 SSE2/SSE3 and fully patched. Step 1 (Finding the Device and Vendor IDs). From XP: 1. Click Control Panel from Start Menu. 2. Double-Click the Administrator Tools. 3. Click Computer Manager. 4. Click Device Manager. 5. Right-Click "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller". 6. Click Properties. 7. Click the Details Tab. 8. Click the Device Instance ID drop-down. 9. Select Hardware ID. 10. Copy the SUBSY value adding the "0x" at the beginning. (mine shows this on the first line: PCI/VEN_1106&DEV_3349&SUBSYS_33491106&REV_00 ) Address I used : 0x33491106 NOTE: If "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" is not listed make sure you have the latest drivers for your board. If you are located outside the US (like me), go to the North American site and download the latest drivers. If this still fails to list "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller", you can try the other 2 options: Option 1 (Doubt this will make a difference...but it may help getting info for sound card....still working on that one): a. Click View in the Device Manager menu. b. Click "Show Hidden Devices". Option 2 - Accessing the System Information utility: a. Click Start Button. b. Navigate to Accessories then System Tools. c. Click "System Information" (You may need to install this using the Add/Remove Programs....Windows Controls). d. You'll need to pull up information on your harddrive(s) but the VEN/DEV ID will be listed in there. (Sorry I don't have the utility installed so I can't give you more info at this time ). Once you have the VEN/DEV ID we can boot into OSX 10.4.8. Now I'll probably get yelled at but since I like the gui interfase better the terminal, I enabled the root user account. SPECIAL NOTE: ONCE LOGGED INTO THE ROOT ACCOUNT PLAYING AROUND CAN RESULT IN DESTRUCTION OF DATA AND THE OS, BACKUP EVERYTHING!!! IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT ANYTHING DON'T DO IT Step 2 (Enabling the Root user account) 1. Double-click the HDD icon. 2. Click Applications. 3. Click Utilities. 4. Double-click NetInfo Manager. 5. Click Enable Root User (You may need to click the "lock Icon" to do this). 6. Enter a password. 7. Quit the Netinfo Manager. 8. Logout. 9. Login as root (make sure you type "root" as username with no capital letter). Step 3 (Modifying the AppleVIAATA.kext file) 1. Double-click Harddrive icon. 2. Starting at the beginning of the tree, open the System folder. 3. Open the Library folder. 4. Open the Extensions folder. 5. Right-click the AppleVIAATA.kext file. 6. Click "Show Package Contents". 7. Open the Contents folder. 8. Right-click the Info.plist file. 9. Select TextEdit from the "Open With" menu option. 10. Scroll down until you see the following: <key>VIA SATA Controller</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.driver.AppleVIAATA</string> <key>Hardware Name</key> <string>8237 SATA</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>AppleVIAATARoot</string> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x528810B9 0x30491106 0x00e310de 0x005410de 0x005510de 0x2360197b 0x2361197b 0x2363197b 0x2365197b 0x2366197b</string> <key>IOProbeScore</key> <string>1000</string> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOPCIDevice</string> <key>Serial ATA</key> <true/> </dict> 11. I one of the values in the following string (2nd value): <string>0x528810B9 0x30491106 0x00e310de 0x005410de 0x005510de 0x2360197b 0x2361197b 0x2363197b 0x2365197b 0x2366197b</string> to <string>0x528810B9 0x33491106 0x00e310de 0x005410de 0x005510de 0x2360197b 0x2361197b 0x2363197b 0x2365197b 0x2366197b</string> 12. Save the file. 13. Restart the PC. Once the OS 10.4.8 reboots, login to your usual user account and you SATA drive should be listed. Just to clean-up you can follow Step 2 to disable the "root" account. I certainly hope this helps! Please reply on your progress! geshadow Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/32892-help-with-asus-p5vdc-mx/#findComment-294387 Share on other sites
Detosx
Good job Geshadow. I seem always to be in internut cafes when I pop on here so I need to read over what you're saying. What I want is to be able to boot from the SATA drive, but even to be able to see it would be progress!
