newb needing help with installing

I'm not a newb in terms of OSX (I own an iMac), but I am a newb in terms of installing it on a PC. First hardware.

Dell Latitude D600

1.4 GHz Pentium M

ATI Radeon 9000

512 MB RAM

Dell Truemobile 1300 WLAN

30 GB hard drive

Ok, so I'm wanting to install OSX on here with as much compatibility as possible, i.e. the least amount of troubleshooting and stability problems. So first off, what's the best release that works with my hardware? I already downloaded 10.4.3 that's already been patched with the Wesley patch. I found directions for installing and followed them. My hard drive is now set up to have 10 GB NTFS for Windows, 10 GB FAT32 for sharing files, then 10 GB for OSX (at least until I know for sure I can run OSX stably, in which case I might wipe the whole drive and run only OSX). So I partitioned the drive with Partition Magic, then followed directions to use diskpart that are around this and other sites (create partition primary id=af). So then I popped in the OSX disk and went for it.

First off, it was running rrreeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy slow. I waited it out, and the install screen comes up eventually, but it's still running incredibly slow. What's funny though is that I disconnected from AC power and ran on only batteries, and suddenly it started running a lot faster. So if someone could help with that first problem, that would be great.

Second, when I got to the part where I choose where to install it, no disk showed up at all. So I figured, OK, probably have to format for Mac OS Extended in Disk Manager. So I did that. Then, the disk did show up to install it on, but it informs me that it cannot start up from this disk and won't install on it. What am I doing wrong? Should I just throw out this disk image and download the latest like 10.4.8 or one of the earlier ones like 10.4.7 or 10.4.6 that have been patched by JaS? I'd rather just test it out with this disk first and know that it'll actually install before spending the time to download a whole other DVD and burn it again. But if it's worth the option, I'll do it.

So any other help anyone can give me would be awesome. Thanks for your patience in advance.

Try reformatting your OSX partition as MSDOS(fat32), then reformatting again as HFS in the installer's Disk Utility(in the Utilities menu). Partition Magic sucks for HFS and won't always get it right the first time.

Ok I fixed my problem. I had an extended partition, so I converted it to a primary one and it installed fine.

But now my problem is different. On boot, it loads fine OSX fine, then it gets to the Welcome movie thing and I get a kernel panic. I tried twice, and same result. I tried searching for an answer but I couldn't find a solution. So close.... yet so far.

Booting in safe mode worked. Thanks.

I'm having some trouble getting things to work though, which may be due to this Wesley patch (I thought I read around here that the JaS one was better). I couldn't get wireless working, and I think whatever driver is being used for my display isn't working too well either (pretty slow at animations, especially screen savers). Plus iTunes wouldn't open. It said it was expired. Is it not even worth trying to get this to work? Should I just upgrade to 10.4.7 or 10.4.8? Does anyone with a D600 have any experience that they can share with me on the matter?

10.4.3 is an old build but i'm not sure if 855PM chipset is support in 10.4.7 or 10.4.8 or not.
