Hi all,

I see there are many knowledgeable people around here so you guys might help.

I`ve got imac 27"(BTO model) and ofc 4850 died. I ordered radeon 5870(from alienware laptop), I hear start chime and I know it boots into system as I press enter and hear that "bong" sound when nothing is selected but no display at all (just black, checked if its backlight issue its not).

So I ordered GTX280M, as I saw someone wrote its easier to get it working... Well not in my case. I installed it and same thing happens, boots - no display.

I know its the graphic card because I can boot into OSX with 4850 in safe mode, still has the lines but works. Can it be that imac is using external mini display port as a primary "display" (for 5870&GTX)?

I also tried smc, pram reset, harware test, safe mode... Nothing helped.

Any suggestions?

Do you have access another mac or hack that has thunderbolt. Try booting in Target disk mode and download this drivers from Nvidia. Now I am making an assumption this is not a Mac Video card. I have used non-mac Video cards in my 2006 Mac Pro Tower i.e. GT630 but I get no black text boot screen but when its done I get the logon. Since your particular iMac had a Radeon and now you have a Nvidia you need these drivers installed. You do say you can get into safe mode if that works maybe install the drivers from there.

I have MBA but doesnt have thunderbolt. I already installed nvidia drivers, I can get into safe boot with 4850 but thats not an issue now as I can remote login on iMac. I dont get "black text" I get blank screen - totally. Its not big deal what card were before as osx has drivers for both anyway.

6xx series already use edp which seems to be a problem here, this card is using LVDS instead of eDP or maybe its just "sending" output to other display (I do see two). Same case with 5870 and gtx280m
