jmbaron
I am trying to install OS X Lion on an external hard drive. I took the InstallESD.dmg file from the 'Install Mac OS X Lion.app' I then made 2 partitions on the hard drive (250gb) 1. Mac OS X Lion (10.7) 2. Mac OS X Install ESD I then clicked 'Restore' on the Mac OS X Install ESD partition and made it restore with the 'InstallESD.dmg' file. My problem is when I try to boot from the hard drive, I get the prohibited sign (\) I am on a mid-2012 MacBook pro running macOS SIerra and I am trying to run Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/318351-cant-boot-os-x-lion-from-external-hard-drive/ Share on other sites
Donk
I think you may have missed that he is on a real Macbook and does not need Hackintosh components. The best way I would suggest is get a USB key and use createinstallmedia from Lion installer https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372. Then plug USB key and external drive in and boot from USB key and finally select external drive for installation. Donk
Yep - probably not the best section for the question. I agree that option is also OK, but I am overly cautious and keep away from touching the main drive when doing this sort of task.
