Does anyone know of any PCI soundcards (NOT INTEGRATED) that are compatible with OSX without having to do any work (such as getting the drivers to work). I found out that my onboard audio is toast and the only thing not working in OSX now is my sound due to that. Someone hook me up! :)

pci sound cards with the cmedia 8738 codec

example: my hercules muse surround 6 channel card

the wiki on this site has a fix for it under compatible hardware components

pci sound devices

I just bought an 8738 soundcard because it looked like a cheap solution to my sound input problem (ALC860/D915GAVL). I installed it with dogberts 0.6.4 driver, now the control panel sees an input, but I still have no sound from mic or line in.. I haven't yet tried disabling the onboard sound or unloading the azalia kext.. Anyone know how to tweak this?

that's not implemented (yet) :D .

Well, regardless, I just picked one up on eBay for $25 shipped. It sounds like 95% of external cards work with OSX so I'll tell you all how it goes!

almost every USB device works - there are generic drivers. and stop

a) hijacking threads and

B) asking stuff which has already been answered or which can be answered by yourself with a litte searching effort.

anyway, I'm currently messing with the implementation of the volume switches and rulers for the 8738. the mixer topology of mac os X seems to be a bit odd to me, and apple's documentation on that topic is thin. could anyone with a mac elaborate the differences and similiarities between the mixer handling in mac os X and windows (sndvol32) ? I assume that most mac cards don't come with a special mixer application, or in other words, the mixer is handled entirely by the OS and its tools. I'm especially interested in the way stuff like "+20dB gain" on a microphone input is handled. some screenshots would be nice - cheers!

Oops.. good job it was a cheap card ;) any idea if/when you might get round to it? I can't offer you more than massive gratitude & my unborn virgin daughter...

i have a Hercules Muse Pocket (USB 5.1) i have tested it :

on my mac mini : work 100%

on my OSX x86 (VAIO and Custom) boxes : work 100% too

all work : sound mute, sound volume button , mic , line in mine out etc

:D

do you actually care to read the postings? this board is still overcrowded with lazy dyslexics.

Dogbert, chill out man. Talk about thread hijackings... ;) If you're sick of people asking the same questions that have been answered who knows how long ago, please just ignore it instead of telling us that we're ignorant. Some of us are new and don't know about some of the issues that have come up in the past. This was more of the response I was looking for...

This post wasnt about "the differences and similiarities between the mixer handling in mac os X and windows."

Start your own thread.

yeah, why do I even bother if ppl aren't willing to obey the most simple rules of human communication... I think I should put my effort into more rewarding and interesting projects instead of wasting my time here.

Well what do you expect in a forum on the "No Brainer" OS running on the "Lowest Common Denominator" hardware?... B)

On the other hand.. It's not like you even put a changelog or readme with your driver.. People need information to progress. whether they be N00bs, code gurus or anywhere inbetween..

We all have a choice; we can be helpful, & take things forwards, or we can stick our heads up our asses & scream that we're surrounded by nincompoops.. :)

it's not that I don't like to answer valid questions about my kernel extension, on the contrary, I'd be glad to do that. But there are things here which really {censored} me off:

1. ppl are allowed to ask the same stupid questions over and over again - 99% of the postings here are redundant and dull.

2. ppl are allowed to hijack threads - Centurion and Reanimation_LP are just two examples for this thread.

3. ppl are allowed to post other stupid {censored} like sensationalistic "findings"

4. the vast majority of ppl aren't willing to help at all. my question about the mixing topology of mac os x remains still unanswered.

as a result, the interesting stuff gets flushed down the drain by all the idiots who scatter all their mental vomit all over the place. this place is like an unattended preschool class. if I can't effectively exchange interesting information with osx86 'hackers' here (and by that, I mean technically skilled people who actually have a clue about what they are saying and doing) and/or help people without random interferences from morons, I don't see any point in putting any more effort in my stuff.

just my 0.02€ ...
