skredii
What you b00ted to the GUI with 10.4.8 kernel? Gr8! Then first thing you should do to fix rosetta (thanks to myzar): In Terminal: sudo update_prebinding -root / -force reboot Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/31208-first-boot-in-1048-with-new-kernel/ Share on other sites
asapreta
It appears that all "dev" team is still working!! gREat! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/31208-first-boot-in-1048-with-new-kernel/#findComment-216721 Share on other sites
skredii
Well, it seems you have to do this command at each boot (update_prebinding), otherwise Rosetta will crash on the second PPC app you run after boot. So guess what, JaS just got a fix for that, so it will work after every reboot and you don't have to worry about anymore. Check out my blog: MacGeek for download and full instructions. Proteo
Here is a resume of my experience with the new kernel. My two cents so we can start narrowing some problems: 1. I couldn't install the new kernel starting from a fresh/clean install (with Jas 10.4.6 DVD as base install), then applying the official combo update. I tried about ten times with different options, and never went beyond the blue screen. I'm using xnu-792.13.8-mifki-1 (Vitalyi's) precompiled kernel. 2. Applying the update over my current install (Jas 10.4.6 > Semjaza 10.4.7 > Kiko 10.4.8 update) did the trick. Ran the official combo update and BEFORE restarting (simply let the installer window alone, I mean don't click the restart button) I replaced the kernel and SMBIOS kext, then repaired permissions, and then restarted. After restart, the system took a while to boot, entered the gray screen, stuck there for a while and then auto-rebooted. I thought it failed, but it booted fine. Then did the update_prebinding thing and restarted one more time. 3. Everything works fine, About this mac is reporting an unknown processor but it's working (I mean, it does not reset the finder). I had a panic the first time I opened the Desktop background preferences pane. After the forced reboot, it works ok. 4. I cannot change the resolution from the system preferences pane (stuck to 1280x1024) but I don't care since that's the only resolution supported natively by my LCD. 5. Sigmatel 9220 sound worked ok after applying JaS patch located at the 10.4.6 DVD. (I guess it could be possible to patch the 10.4.8 kexts but I don't have time right now to try it). 6. Ethernet adapter worked out of the box. I just restarted and voilà. 7. I have no problem using rosetta apps, no matter how many times I open or close them. I just did the update_prebinding thing the first time I restarted after applying the update. So far, no need to use Jas' rosetta fix for me. 8. My CPU is using both cores (I can see them running from the Activity monitor). I haven't touched the com.apple.Boot.plist. I think I did some tweaks the first time I installed 10.4.6 but nothing related to the CPU (it was something about booting to graphics instead text mode). 9. So far, so good. It's been running perfectly for the past 12 hours. No hangs, no lags, no bugs (besides the commented) and everything is snap and quick. Photoshop is indeed faster, so does Dreamweaver, Flash and Office (the only PPC apps I have installed). I don't have my previous Xbench scores but if somebody with a similar setup as mine send me theirs, I can do the test. EDIT: Lotsawater screensaver is not working anymore. I think it is due to recent changes in the open gl libraries, but for now just avoid it (it gives a panic as soon as you try to use it). EDIT: Lotsawater is working again after replacing AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext. I recovered the ability to switch resolutions too but most important, color profiles are working again (with the 10.4.8 kext I couldn't get my color profile to be recognized). Vitaliy
Here is a resume of my experience with the new kernel. My two cents so we can start narrowing some problems: i'm glad it works for you now. of course some kexts need to be patched again (sigmatel, video and so on) because before this new kernel we used old kexts and now they all are replaced. so it will take some time to update drivers for all hardware installation prodecure is still difficult sometimes.. I think this will be fixed when we'll have installation dvd with intergated new kernel also I hope soon I'll release several more patches to fix some problems in kernel Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/31208-first-boot-in-1048-with-new-kernel/#findComment-217335 Share on other sites
