If write "Graphics Mode"="640x480x32" set resolution on 640x480. That explains the fact that Tiger detect 1024*640 compatibility under vmware, while it can't go above 800*600 with your true non-emulated graphic card. I have the same problem with my laptop which can't go above 1024*768 under Tiger whereas it supports 1600*1200 with winXP. You can only wait for a driver...
