First, I recommend using the OSX bootloader instead of chain0. But if you insist...

There are two parts to setting up chain0 - first you install the chain0 file in your C:\ directory and second, you modify the boot.ini file to add the chain0 command.

First, be sure to set the Windows partition active. Use a Windows/Linux disk/partition utility or use Fdisk built into OSX: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=22844

Then boot Windows. Insert the OSX install DVD. Find the chain0 file on the DVD and copy it to your C:\ drive.

Then edit the boot.ini file in C:\ and add this line to the end: c:\chain0="Mac OS X"

Here is an example of a boot.ini file: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=159052

if i put the OSX DVD and choose to boot from the drive

it will start the installation again

but i can press F8 and go into darwin for commands

do you think that i could fix it more easy there instead of fdisk and dos?

ok im in :D

now i cant see the DISK with the OSX in my computer in XP

is this normal?

must i do something more with the fdisk for this partition also?

or im ok and i just to the modify in boot.ini and paste the chain0?

also another strange thing...

when i set active the XP partition and i exit fdisk

reboot

and it show me a screen with operating system choose

1. (EMPTY ...JUST AN EMPTY SPACE ,NO WORD)

2. Operating system XP bla bla

in the 1st place i choose XP offcourse cause i wanted to boot

now i reboot and i wanted to see if this empty space (1) will boot OSX

but it boot XP again

i think i must do something more with the FDISK again in this disk (OSX)

the FDISK recognized it as MS-DOS bla bla so its the one with the OSX in

cmon guys i want to boot to OSX again...it WAS FAST and i had only 5minutes with it

Slow down. You are getting yourself all wrapped around the axle. One step at a time.

Fdisk is used to set a partition active so that it is the first one to boot. You want to boot the partition that has the bootloader on it. So, if you are using chain0, make the Windows partition active so that the Windows bootloader is the first thing to be launched.

Once the computer boots to the bootloader on the Windows partition, you need to set up chain0. Boot into Windows. Insert the OSX install DVD into the drive. In Windows, go to Windows Explorer or My Computer to find the OSX DVD. Copy the chain0 file to your C:\ directory.

Next modify boot.ini. Add c:\chain0="Mac OS X" as the last line of boot.ini as shown in this posting: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=159052

Now, when you reboot your computer, you will see the Windows bootloader. You should be able to select the OSX partition and boot to it.

Now, if you happen to boot the install DVD and want to use it to boot into OSX, when it asks to hit Enter or F8, press F8. You will see the OSX bootloader. Select the OSX partition and hit Enter. This also should boot you into OSX.

i think i found the problem with the other (dead) OSX appears in boot load

look my boot.ini

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=""

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

just delete the bold line?

i think it doesnt needed ,a?

yes i removed the bold line

now i have 1) max os .. ..

2)XP .. ..

if i go 2) it boots XP

if i go 1) it returns to the boot select :D

i think i have the same problem as the other guys

i go to FDISK again

should that DISK be in my computer ?

i think it should

cause its not here at all (at xp)

if i put the DVD and press F8 as you said it starts the installation again

i can choose only the JAS DVD as boot (from darwin after F8)

...?

what i blv is that there is the disk with the OS and not have an active partition?

what should i check at FDISK now i will load it ?

i think i start to feel dizzy

tjhnakz for your help :D

If you boot the install DVD and press F8 when it asks, a menu (bootloader) of available partitions comes up. If your OSX partition is not in that menu, then something is very wrong. And if your XP partition is not in that menu, then something is very, very wrong.

I understand that you now can boot into XP, so your immediate crisis is gone.

You asked about setting the OSX partition active. Only one partition can be active at a time. Setting a partition active tells the boot software that the partition is the one to be booted. If you have a bootloader set up, you want the partition with the bootloader to be active so it boots first. When you select a partition in the bootloader menu, the bootloader temporarily sets that partition active so it can be booted. So, right now you want your XP partition active so you can get to the bootloader. From there you can boot XP. When you select OSX, the bootloader temporarily sets the OSX partition active so that it will boot. Since OSX doesn't boot and doesn't show up in the OSX bootloader when you try to boot from the DVD, there is a problem.

Later, when you have time, I suggest you try to reinstall OSX to its partition. Start by setting the OSX partition active and boot the install DVD to the installer. Go to Disk Utility and erase your partition as MacOS Extended Journaled. Then proceed with the installation and select packages in Customize. Finish up the installation. It should then reboot into OSX so you can set it up. Once you are set up in OSX, you should go set the XP partition active so that you can again use the bootloader in XP.

I notice from your picture you have other hard drives. It might be wise to disconnect them until you get things working. That way, nothing will accidentally screw them up.

According to PartitionMagic screenshot, spanakorizo's trying to install OSX in a logical partition.

OSX prefers being installed in a primary partition; and also a primary partition before an extended partition.

So you should create an unallocated space between your first partition and the extended partition to create a primary partition and install osx there as indicated by Ramjet. Resize and move your extended partition (since your first partition seems almost full).

ok i will try this also

i really messed the disks now, right now i have no OSX installation

i downloaded also acronis os selector ,the pc will :)

acronis found the operating system but i had message something about partition (before darwin)

maybe the problem was that i had to install OSX in a primal partition

i create a new partition primary and reinstall now (a-g-a-i-n)

im very angry i cant solve this (if i had an empty disk i would be ok now)

its like OSX for 1 use only

after reboot cant boot again :D

First boot with Mac OS x86 DVD, in the menu bar, select Terminal.

Type fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0

Type Print (Read the partition) and use map followed by the partition number you want to active.

Type Quit and "y"

Reboot

can you explain it?

i cant understand what to do after the print

the partition is made with partition magic ,FAT32 and set to primary

but now i cannt either format it

i think i did something via the mac fdisk and now partition magic shows that all my disk is bad

any good program to fix the partition errors???

i think i give up

very pissed of

"Extended LBA" for partition #2 indicates it's the extended partition that begins. Partition #3 (Fat32) is the first logical partition in that extended partition.

Are you trying to delete #2? It might refuse if you didn't delete #3 (the "extended" is a container of sorts, and some partition tools will refuse to delete it while it still contains logical partitions).

You seem to be still in the situation of this image.

Go back to a visual user-friendly partitioning tool (like your PMagic). Backup anything in that fat32 logical partition. If there's nothing else to back up in that extended partition, then delete first the logicals, then the extended. Now when you create a new partition, specify you want a PRIMARY partition; in PM8 a primary partition isn't surrounded in that blue-ish line.

When that partition (fat32) is created, make it active, then reboot on the osx install dvd, and follow your favorite guide.
