Ive been trying to find what are the files involved when System Profiler is loaded.

For About window (apart from base line files):

natd. syslogd

For More info (Sys Prof gets called):

natd, syslogd, bootpd, AppleFileServer, netinfod, DirectoryService, notifyd.

The following are not included in JaS delta 10.4.8 u/g:

syslogd, bootpd.

I tried to install Jas 10.4.8 and avoid the above files/apps...

Unfortunately it hosed my system again.

So I have put back AppleFileServer and DirectoryService, and will see what it does...

I want to get the System Profiler as it was with 10.4.7 but still use 10.4.8... ;)

After hosing my system a few times trying to solve this, I accept gracefully not being able to get System Profiler the way it was reporting in 10.4.7 and before.

Applying kiko combo 10.4.8 update gives a hardware reporting error.

JaS delta 10.4.8 update removes the line with detailed cpu capabilities and identifies processor as unknown.

Replacing SPPlateformReporter.spreporter with one from 10.4.7 repairs kiko error, and reports the number of processors as 2 (if HT is available, ie Preccott).

Also I managed to repair my hosed system without a full re-install.

Its working good at 10.4.8.

I checked with the Reggie SE developer tool from CHUD, and it confirms to detect two Intel Pentium 4 CPUs.

If it aint broke, why fix it, or as they say in Russia, better is the enemy of good...

And maybe some gurus here will fix this eventually

Cheers
