On the drive, between the very wide data connector and the power connector is a small panel for jumpers. You have to configure the jumpers for master or slave. Look at the face of each drive for a guide on how to place the jumpers. The two drives may have different patterns for the jumpers, so be sure to look at both drives to find the correct configuration. Make the hard drive master and the optical drive slave. Be sure the two devices are on the same cable.

 

If you fail to get that to work, then you can try installing through VMWare to your hard drive. Once you complete that, you will not need VMWare to boot your drive.
