Hi!

SO , I have a laptop.

Athlon 3000 sse2 support amd 64 bit.

512 ram

80gb hdd

ATI MObility 9700 gfx card.

Right, good, got a copy of 10.4.7

and have installed the gubbins which will allow it to run on the amd.

However, when it boots - i hear music and so on, but nothing but a gumbled jumbled up mess on the screen - its as if it cannot find a graphics driver for my laptop, however it is a supported card.

Does anyone have any ideas on what on earth i can do to fix this.

please reply asap - and thanks in advance for any help

Andy

edit....

Ok, tried reinstalling several times - now it boots up to the random video saying welcome, etc - and says Tigar getting started..... however now thats all it does = it does the video, then loops it, as far as i can see infinately - and i cannot get out of it!!!!

What is going on?

Boot the OSX install DVD. Select your OSX partition to install to. You do not need to go to Disk Utility and erase your partition. Click the Customize button and check ONLY the AMD package. Be sure to uncheck everything else. The Install button now says Upgrade. Click it.

Ok, - what happens now, is the same as before, but

After each repetition of the video, it says:

localhost /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow Application started

then says USBF transaction hasnt move in 5 seconds timing out

then sometimes, it says : other stuff bout usb ports.

Any ideas?

hit F8 during the countdown timer, and hit -x then return, you'll boot into safe mode and it should work, then install your GFX card drivers.

Thats the step I am at now, same problem with all the {censored} on my screen in normal mode with my 9800Pro. I am going down the reinstall route as I think I ballsed up during install by clicking the wrong extra :S

Wireless - you need the vendor id and device id.

Go into Windows -> Device Manager. Under Network Adapters, find the wireless device and get Properties on it. Click on the Details tab. The vendor id is the 4 characters following "VEN". The device id is the 4 characters following "DEV".

Use those with this guide: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=23684

except, there is a typo in the guide. Edit the file like this:

sudo nano /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext/Contents/Info.plist

For Callisto, read all of the documents included with the package. You can read this guide, but remember to substitute the correct data for your card: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=21182

For XRadeonFB - it is still very experimental - be sure to read all of the caveats pertaining to laptops and LCD's, etc. and if you still qualify, the instructions given there are simple:

then drop it into your extensions folder and repair permissions

That is the /System/Library/Extensions folder. Repair permissions using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Reboot.

Argh!!

There are two potential drivers here - Callisto and XradeonFB. Use one or the other.

To install Callisto, you need to go to http://omni.starchaser.or/callisto and get a package. Read all of the documents in the package. Use this guide to help you, but substitute info for your card: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=21182

For XRadeonFB - it is very experimental. There are restrictions and conditions for its use. Go here to get the driver and read the restrictions and conditions: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=29450

OK!!?? This is the same info I just gave you above.

Bootloader - you must set the OSX partition "active". Use a Windows/Linux disk/partition utility or use Fdisk built into OSX: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=22844

Once you get into OSX, modify the timeout parameter in boot.plist to reveal the bootloader: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=188186

My answer above gives bootloader info through OSX.

For windows, you set the Windows partition active. Boot Windows. Insert the OSX install DVD. Find the chain0 file on the DVD and copy it to your C:\ drive. Then edit the boot.ini file and add this line to the end: c:\chain0="Mac OS X"

Here is an example of a boot.ini file: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=159052

Because you installed Windows last, the (hidden) OSX bootloader is probably set to default to Windows. What happens is you select OSX in Windows, it goes to OSX where the bootloader says to go to Windows and it does.

Boot the OSX install DVD. Hit F8 when it asks. Select the OSX partition and when you get into OSX, expand the OSX bootloader window like I specified several postings ago: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=188186

That way, when you select OSX in Windows, it will go to OSX and show its bootloader where you can select OSX again and boot OSX.

Or, as I suggested earlier, just use the OSX bootloader. Once you expand the OSX bootloader window, you can go remove the chain0 line from boot.ini in Windows. And then make the OSX partition active.

I appreciate how annoying this can be asking so much.

But I just dont understand how to do this, wouldnt know the commands - nothing, the help command doesnt work particulary well either as gfx are messed up.

I simply want to dual boot.

I understand now, the windows is active partition, but surely you can just have osx on the other partition and just pick at startup.

The boot.ini isnt working, so how else do i do it, specific easy steps for me please.... am very very new to unix.

Thanks so much for such superb help.

Again...I have given you all of the commands you need.

Use the OSX bootloader instead of the Windows bootloader. Meaning, don't use chain0.

Boot the OSX install DVD. When it asks, hit F8. Select the OSX partition. When you get into OSX, expand the OSX bootloader: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=188186

Boot into Windows. Remove the chain0 line from boot.ini.

Make the OSX partition "active". Use a Windows/Linux disk/partition utility or use Fdisk built into OSX: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=22844

All this information was given either in post 22 above or in previous posts.

ok, so..

I shal remove the chain0 and bit i added to boot.ini.

Load into my mac osx using the dvd. once in the mac osx os, open boot.plist and add:

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>10</string>

then repair disk permissions once replaced.

Then ,,,,open the osx install dvd, open terminal.:

diskutil list

get the partition

fdisk -e/dev/rdisk0 where rdisk0 is my mac osx partition.

p

f 1 - or whatrever my osx partition is

then write

then y

then exit.

And what exactly will be the result of the above ^^^^^

Thanks for help. I read your above post and both the topics you gave me - and thats the info i extracted from it
