I do not use this unsightly bootloader, and I have no problem with icons on boot, I use Enoch. Different versions of OSX can have different icons (Lion, Mountain Lion, Mav, etc) but otherwise it is pretty much determined by format of the partitions (FAT, NTFS, EXT3, etc) except there is determination of OpenBSD and FreeBSD.
