Extreme artifacting - x1600xt

First, I tried the JaS 10.4.6 DVD, then manually installed the boris drivers and I got massive artifacting, like the entire screen. Then I grabbed JaS 10.4.7 and the DVD came with the ati x1300/1600/1800 driver script in there already so installed them. yet again the whole screen is artifacting. I can't even boot with -x into safe mode, it still artifacts. I've never had problems with the official ATI drivers in linux or in windows.

I have the Asus EAX1600xt silent 256mb card. Do I need to use different bios's for the card or something? I really want to get this to work, i got everything else working... :) Forum search isnt turning up much.

Thanks

-Joe

I would try installing the JaS cd again without the x1600 driver and do the borisbadenov method manually

btw a better way to search the forums is using google..

in the search bar type what you want to search for and follow it by "site:forum.insanelymac.com" or "site:forum.osx86project.org"

example:

Also you can try this,

boot -v -f -s

at the root prompt type in

mount -uw /

next type in these commands

rm -r /system/library/extensions/atiradeonx1000*

then type in reboot

now boot up -v -f

and that will get yo to the desktop so you can try and work something out.

hey, what's your device ID? go to 'apple - "about this mac" - more info - graphics/displays' and tell us what your ID is. mine is 0x71c0 and the boris method seems to work best with 71c2. for my card (same as yours), i created a tutorial to get it working but we're discovering that there's multiple types of this card floating around. it's a pain the a** but hopefully we'll figure it out.

I'm having the same problem. I did not install the X1600/etc driver when installing. I have an AIW X800. It worked in 10.4.6 without issue, even after I updated to 10.4.7, but then something happened to that drive and I am reinstalling.

I will look into the boris method, and report back what I can. I was able to get into safemode by holding CTRL during boot. Just FYI.

Yeah, I read up on that post last night. I tried some similar methods with the 9700 kext because I'm pretty sure that is what was working previously. No luck though =(

Has anyone seen any other similar posts on this, or experienced this issue? It seems like it is a wider problem than just the X1000+ series.

I'll check things like the boot plist and anything else I can think of but I'm guessing more than anything at this point. Any other help would be appreciated.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have this extreme artifacting issue as well, using any version of anyone's X install disc from 10.4.6 to 10.4.8 including JaS' latest 10.4.8 full release. However, I have a 10.4.4 disc that works perfectly, using the borisbadenov method on the files from that release.

As soon as I activate the X1000.kext from 10.4.6 or 10.4.8, I have green, pink and cyan squares all over my screen. If I change resolutions, I get an artifact-free blank blue screen for a second and then the artifacts are back. I have a retail boxed Radeon X1600 (0x1002:71c2) and no issues like this, outside of 10.4.6 / 10.4.8 ... Any suggestions?

HIS has just released a new low profile version of the X1600 Pro card, the HIS X1600Pro 512MB HyperMemory, which they class as a single slot low cost solution. The card is mainly aimed at use in media centre PC's or small form factor PC's, as it only needs one PCI-Express slot and has a low profile PCB.

The card supports DirectX 9.0c, Shader Model 3.0 and ATI's AVIVO technology. As the card features HyperMemory II it is possible to use part of the system's memory as graphics memory to enhance graphics performance. The GPU is clocked at 500MHz, the 128MB DDR2 runs at 400MHz (800MHz DDR).
