Like you said, it's just a naming convention, it makes it easy to quickly distinguish Apple system files from other stuff. Handy when troubleshooting, especially when you're looking for something non-Apple, which can be named anything. Look at ~/Library/Preferences in alphabetized list view to see this for yourself.
