HOW TO install Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a Dell Dimension 5100/5150/e510 (possibly others)

Requirements:

- Dell Dimension 5100/5150/e510 (maybe others)

- USB drive with 8 gb or more

- Snow leopard retail/DMG

- Access to hackintosh or real mac with at least Snow Leopard

- OR you could use a distro but this guide might not work 100% (recommend iAtkos S3 v2)

- MyHack

- Combo update 10.6.8 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 + Extra Files (EDIT 21-6-15: LINK IS DEAD. PLEASE UPGRADE YOUR PC TO SOMETHING NEWER. TRUST ME IT IS WORTH IT!])

Specs of computer this was tested on:

- Pentium D 930 (upgraded from P4 521)

- AMD Radeon HD4650 (upgraded from x600) *IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT VIDEO CARD, SOME PARTS OF THE PROCEDURE WILL BE SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF!*

- 2GB RAM

- Onboard Audio/Lan

- BIOS A03

Bios settings

- Everything set to default, except:

- Disk controller mode: combination (this is needed in order to get sleep working, otherwise it hangs on resume!). This doesn’t decrease performance at all (can attach proof if needed).

Preparation
Do the following steps from a mac/hackintosh

  • Put the Snow leopard DMG on the mac or put the Snow Leopard DVD in the drive
  • Follow the myHack guide (on the myHack website) to create your 10.6 installer USB
  • From Extra Files (attached) put the “mach_legacy” file in the root of the usb drive

Create HFS+ Partition from windows
If you want OS X on same disk as windows:

  • Use windows partitioner or gparted to create an unallocated space for the OS X partition.
Make sure you currently have 3 or less primary partitions.
  • Open a command prompt window with admin privileges and enter “diskpart”
  • Enter: “list disk”
“select disk X” where X is the disk you wish to install OS X on
    “create partition primary id=af”
  • Check the new partition layout with “list partition”
If everything is ok, reboot computer and boot from USB drive

Installation

  • Boot from the created USB by hitting F12 and type at the prompt:
    “mach_legacy –v”
  • Get a drink
  • Select you language and open disk utility
  • Select the partition you created earlier and format at it as extend HFS (journaled)
  • Select the disk and install
  • After 20 minutes it will ask 2 questions. The answers you should give depend on your system. The first question you should answer yes
  • Reboot and set your OS X partition as active. This is very easy to do so I won’t explain it here.

First boot

  • Boot from USB again
  • At prompt select the myHack install partition but don’t press enter, type “mach_legacy diskXsY –v” where X is the OS X disk and Y is its partition
  • Install combo update 10.6.8 DON’T REBOOT!!! Instead after install, install the 10.6.8 kernel using the installer from Extra Files. Reboot.
  • At the prompt type “legacy_kernel npci=0x2000 –v”
  • Drag and drop the following kexts into kext helper: Sleepenabler IONetwork ATIRad2000 ATI4600.
  • Replace the boot.plist with the included one
  • Reboot and check if internet works. If not, reboot again
  • Install voodoohda 2.7.4 and install voodoohda.kext with kext helper
  • Add voodoohdasettingsloader to startup (see the instruction in the Extra Files folder)
  • Select use SSE2 in voodoohda settings for better audio
  • Reboot. Maybe you get kernel panic, just reboot again.
  • You may also remove applehpet.kext in \System\Library\Extensions. This improves stability for me but try it for yourself.
  • Well done if you have everything working now.

EVERYTHING WORKS, EXCEPT LAN IS BUGGY. IF LAN DOESN’T WORK YOU HAVE TO REBOOT. BUT THEN IT WORKS AND SYSTEM IS STABLE TOO.
Hopefully this is still useful to someone with an old Dell system. Good luck!

reason for edit: added link to extra files
