loderunner Posted September 20, 2005 Share Posted September 20, 2005 My System: Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz P4PE Asus motherboard with builtin broadcom 400x ethernet adapter 1 G DDR1 (3200) memory 30 GB IBM Hard Drive ATI 128 Rage Pro video Card 600 W power supply Samsung 17" Monitor Toshiba DVD-Rom I parttioned my hard drive in two partitions and I sucessfully installed the OS x86 on first partition of my hard drive in the computer. I could connect to the internet and play my music CDs and video DVDs. AS soon as I installed Windows XP on my second partition my internet stopped working. During the startup process I can see that OS x86 disables the ethernet port. The light on the connector goes off. However if boot my computer unde Windows the the port stat working and I can see the flicking light showing that the adapter is connected to the internet. I have a cable modem and the internet trafiic to my comuter is routed through a Linksys router. My computer is hard wired to this router. I have reinstall te OS on a new single Hard Drive (no dual boot), but now I cannot get to the the internet. I do not understand why this OS disables my ehernet. When I try to diagnose the internet problem in OS x86 I get a message that some other application has changed the internet setting. I do not know what that means. The adapter cannot find the bulitin ehernet resulting in failed messages for eveything. I would appreciate if somebody can shed some light on this problem. flow Posted September 20, 2005 Share Posted September 20, 2005 the similiar case happened to my laptop too. 1. deadmoo on a hp celeron2.8G sse2 only, although it is super slow, but internew is still ok 2. deadmoo on a dell inspiron 6000 centrino, doul boot with xp. 2.a boot at "-v" first couple of times, the internet was ok, is is on the ACPI mode 2.b then all of sudden, the internet not working (the light on the back didnt light up, and on the reference panel shows no signs on internet connection), I guessed it may be due to the fact cable is too far from the router, (power problem? but it is perfectly fine for the windows xp) I used a hub(10M) to short the distence. the back light in on, but the "reference control" gave it a weird a IP (self assigned by OS) still no luck to connect. 2.c what I did wrong here? maybe I have used the platform=acpi|x86pc before and messed up the internal setting for the power setting inside the bios? 2.d re "dd" the deanmoo, maxxussed 0.5c, no luck, delete all ATI, Nvid video drivers, still no luck. 2.e out of desperation, shut it down, reboot, N-times. all of sudden, it is back again. loderunner Posted September 21, 2005 Author Share Posted September 21, 2005 Hmm.. no taker for this problem. While booting the computer, I cheked the error messages for my Broadcom adapter. They are as follows: AppleBCM440xEthernet: Ethernet adress:00:e0:18:e7:a4:b4 bfe0: BUG! Timeout wating for bit 00000002 of regular register 42C to clear May 31 12:54:53 localhost mDNSResponder:Adding browse domain local bfe0: BUG! Timeout waiting for bit 80000000 of register 428 to clear. Can any body help me to decipher this error message? BTW, I did search on the internet. There appears to be the same broblem for a few people using LINUX for the same adapter. Mine is on. That is why I can get it worrking under Windows XP but not under OS x86, since OS x86 disables it as soon it start checking for the ethernet port. It happens at the very end of boot up process. Jelmer Posted September 23, 2005 Share Posted September 23, 2005 I have a similar problem, but there is a way around it. The problem is that windows xp writes to some strange register of the card. OS X cant work with this and tells you the BUG! message. Each time after I logged in on windows, I turn of my laptop, pull out the electricity cable, and take out the battery. When I do this, somehow the strange register will be cleared, and internet will work again. The problem was that the "bfe" drivers which are supposed to intialize the ethernet port (ther error messages about bfe: BUG I was getting) were disabled or as JELMER stated that windows xp writes some strange register of the card, which OSx86 cannot handle . I tried differnent approaches and the one which intialized my port was by booting my computer from UBUNTU Linux Bootable CD. I did not install Linux and rebooted the computer from my hard drive, where x86 resides. The light on the ethernet port were back and I could connet to the internet without any problem, of course using SAFARI. I will try Firefox next. I believe since LINUX and Darwin are based on UNIX and have the same mechanism to setup a network or port activation, LINUX "bfe" drivers intiated my ethernet port. I have native install and do not want to mess around with dual boot, at least for now. It can indeed be solved by shutting down and removing the power supply for a moment. The battery does *not* have to be removed, though. Wasn't it for the lack of a better power management on the centrino platform, i'd say: Good job Apple: Even as beta OSX is a lot better than any final windows I'm really looking forward to the macbooks and the new mac mini.
