Always boot on safe mode Why?

Safe mode: Look in the file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist under Kernel Flags. If there is a "-x" there, then remove it.

Login window: does it boot up completely and take you to the Desktop or does it stop booting where the login window should be? If it boots up completely, then it may be set up to do that. When there is only one user, there is a way to disable the login window and boot straight to the Desktop. To see this option: System Preferences -> Accounts -> click on the lock -> enter password -> click Login Options -> see option to "Automatically log in as..."
