I’m looking for some help.

I installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 using iAtkos.

It works fine, however, the disc will only read if I put a Mac format disc in.

If I put a blank in, it won’t read anything there, and is says no disk burner, so I can’t burn anything.

The headphones get sound, but the built-in speakers do not work.

Also, I can’t seem to get anything higher than OpenGL 1.0 though some of my programs say need 1.3 at least.

Finally, I’ve tried 3 ways to upgrade, and all crash the system and I have to reinstall Snow Leopard to use again.

Am looking for any info on fixing the problems, kexts I may need, etc.

Using SIW, here are the statistics for my laptop.

Sorry it is so long, but figured show as much as I can to start.

If any more info is needed, let me know.

Most of what's on that list is useless garbage. Your Windows Experience Index score and your hard drive's power cycle count has no effect on your hardware's ability to run OS X. These are the only bits that are actually useful:

SKU Number Montevina_Fab

North Bridge Intel GL40

South Bridge Intel ICH9-M

CPU Name Intel Celeron 925

CPU Code Name Penryn

This tells us that you can use the vanilla kernel and (if the ICH9 is in AHCI mode) unmodified SATA controller drivers.

Montevina (AKA Centrino 2) is the 5th generation Centrino platform. Since the previous Centrino platform, "Santa Rosa", Apple stopped using the Intel Centrino platform in their MacBooks and went to Nvidia for their chipset needs.

Your laptop being Montevina-based means you probably have Intel GMA X4500 video which is not supported on OS X, there is no driver for it. This means that you cannot have hardware accelerated graphics and that's why you're stuck on software rendered OpenGL 1.0.

Missing, useful information:

Ethernet (wired and wireless), on-board sound and video card make and model.

This probably works with VoodooHDA, if you're having issues visit the VoodooHDA development thread over at the Project OSX forums and look for information there. Try different versions of VoodooHDA or use the vendor and device ID to search and find out if someone has already made a modified version that works better with your hardware.

If you're looking for drivers for your ethernet hardware then type this into the forum search to see what you can come up with:

Atheros AR8152

Atheros AR9285

I’ve tried 3 ways to upgrade, and all crash the system and I have to reinstall Snow Leopard to use again.

That's not a very good description of what's happening. You should provide more details like screenshots or crash logs, what you were doing when it crashed etc etc. Also provide more information about your install method.

I actually found drivers and kexts to work with Atheros, as I've been online with Snow Leopard already.

The built in update died.

So I tried ##### update.

And update manager tool I downloaded.

I can't screenshot as entire system locks and have to reinstall SL to get it running again, but here is something I can see.

After using combo updater I get a message.

The machine freezes so I can only get parts of it.

It is blocked by a window telling me to restart.

But here is what I can see:

panic (cpu 0 caller 0x2a96e6): "Version mis-match between kernel and cpu PM" @ /source cache/xnu/xnu-1504.7.4/osfmk/i386/pm cpu.c:706

Debugger called: <panic>

Also, any idea on why, with Snow Leopard, it will read disks but says no burn device and won't recognize blank disks?

If you type..

"Version mis-match between kernel and cpu PM"
...into the search box above, you will find that the fix for that is to delete sleepenabler.kext before updating. Follow the directions given here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=211989

Try updating your DVD drive's firmware.

That's because your drive is only sold to laptop manufacturers, it's not available in retail.

If you can't find a firmware update for it on Toshiba's support page for your laptop it's probably wisest to forget about it.

Other laptop manufacturers (HP, Dell) use that same drive as well and you can find firmware updates for it on their sites. Not sure it would be safe to use or if the updater would even run. Do this at your own risk.
