Hey guys!

first of all - sorry if my english isn't that good.

this is my first post and i'm very excited, nice to meet you all!

I have been an happy apple user for around 7 years now, when finally decided i want more power for the money so i decided to build my first hackintosh ever.

i'm a motion graphics and compositing artist (also doing some 3D works from time to time) and i'm running lot's of 4K and HD footage on my system, so i really need a powerful machine.

since i'm no genius in matter of hardware, i got these tech specs for a powerful computer from a store who handles those stuff.

i'm not going to post prices here since i'm not in the US and also because money isn't an issue here (i'm not rich - i just really really need the top-notch hardware for my work) - what i really care about is to know if you guys have any ideas or other thoughts about those specs, or if you would have use an X component instead of a Y i posted here.

it's important to say this machine will mostly be running adobe software but not only.

here's a list of the main softs i'm going to use (from top down in matter of priority): After Effects, Cinema 4d, Photoshop, Illustrator, final cut, premiere.

so, here are those specs, tell me what u think (mostly not sure about the graphic card):

Processor: intel Core i7 990x Extreme Edition

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R 2.0

Cooler: Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B

Memory: Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz X3

Graphic Card: Nvidia 9500GT 1GB (Passive)

HD For the operating system: Samsung 500GB 7200RPM

HD for data: Samsung 1TB 7200RPM (32MB) X2

Enclosure: Antec Performance One P183 V3

Power Supply: Seasonic 500W +80

Optical Drive: LG CD/DVD/RW (Dual-Layer)

Fans: Scythe GentleTyphoon 800rpm 12cm X2

ok everything looks good compatibility wise with osx.

But WTF that guy is dumb who recommended that stuff. get a better GPU and PSU.

that GPU is 4 GENERATIONs old in the graphics card world.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150517 would be a good choice, but maybe alittle cheaper one would do just fine too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102929

the PSU is severely lacking(like i think it would burn up in heavy use). get a 750W psu at least. i would go for 850 watt.

and if you got money, get a big SSD for your OS drive. they are much faster than regular HDDs and for stuff you are doing on your comp, very useful. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220601 you can get a smaller capacity, that is a good brand and model though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220600

tell me how much more you can spend and i will tweak my recommendations alittle more.

Thanks Sirbow2.

actually, i was thinking about an nvidia card because of its MERCURY engine support which the radeon doesn't do.

i heard the older nvidia gtx470 is a good option.

as for the budget, let's say money is not an issue, yet if it's radically expensive, please write down a cheaper alternative

as well. :)

all i'm really after is a powerfull editing/vfx/graphics workstation which is extremely strong and stable.

Cheers!

OS SSD:

EXP 480GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220601

Cheaper 240GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220600

GPU (nvidia)

Exp: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130587

cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130604

you could go SLI(two same GPUs hooked together, or 3 :D)

PSU 850W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139009 (never go cheap on a PSU, what can you do without one, eh.)

CPU closed loop water cooler, same price, but different designs depending on case its in, im guessing the bigger one will fit:

Big: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835181017

Smaller: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835209054

dont worry, no maintenance, cooler than air, and all you gotta do is put it in like an air cooler. GET THIS!

Storage HDD: 1TBs are nothing anymore now in terms of price:

3TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822145472

2TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822145475

note: that mobo only has two 6.0Gb/s sata ports, so put the SSD and HDD on the 6GB ports and the DVD drive on the 3GB normal SATA. 6GB sata is the latest Sata3 and so are the SSDs and HDDs i linked you too. a DVD drive or bluray drive will work just fine on a 3GB SATAII port(but a SSD or HDD will be slower on a SATAII port).

BLURAY: if you wish to replace the standard DVD drive, can read write everything(CD, DVD, Bluray).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827136226

MEMORY: DDR3 1600Mhz is DIRT CHEAP right now, so get alot while you can :D. 4GB is probably low for waht you are doing so:

24GB $159 USD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231359

16GB $109 USD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231429

(personally id go with 24GB as it is only 50 bucks more)

CASE: i looked at it, looks like crappy air flow. Get ATX FULL:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811146068

So for top end:

Processor: intel Core i7 990x Extreme Edition

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R 2.0

Cooler: CORSAIR H100

Memory: Kingston 24GB DDR3 1600

Graphic Card: EVGA Nvidia Geforce 580 GTX (maybe X2?)

HD For the operating system: 480GB SSD

HD for data: HITACHI Deskstar 3TB (maybe X2 for backup?)

Enclosure: NZXT Phantom PHAN-001BK Black Steel / Plastic

Power Supply: CORSAIR 850W

Optical Drive: LG Black BLURAY/CD/DVD write/read

Fans: Scythe GentleTyphoon 800rpm 12cm X2

wow thanks!

you've really put some thinking into it, i really appreciate that.

as far as i know, the nvidia 5** series are not fully compatible and are very buggy at the moment, so i think i'll go for something else. i need a stable system since it's for work and not for gaming.

the other part seems reasonable but why do i need a water cooler if i ain't gonna overclock my cpu?

closed loop water cooling that i linked you to is the same price as a good air cooler, quiter, more efficient cooler. and for a six core CPU like yours and water cooler would be good.

5xx series is already almost fully supported, see: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=260074

so i dont think it is work getting less performance with a 4xx series.
