I am currently contemplating running OSX via VMware, or setting up a dual boot with my current laptop. The problem with VMware is finding an OSX image that works properly, because apple has made it incredibly difficult to run OSX through a Virtual Machine. Also running OSX through VMware seems to be slow, I haven't tried it yet but I would only be able to dedicate so much of my resources considering I use my laptop for many thing in Windows, and cannot sacrifice too much.

I was wondering if it is possible to partition then install OSX on a External HD, through Win7 on my computer. Then have the option to boot to OSX when the HD is plugged in. If not, I wouldn't mind splitting up my laptops memory for OSX, considering I only plan on using OSX for iPhone app development I would only give it a minimal amount of space. It's a 300gb HD, so I'd only dedicate 100 or less for OSX.

Last but most importantly, when dual booting OSX on a Win7 Laptop how does the hardware come into play? I know compatibility is a big issue, but my HP Envy 15 is running with a Intel Core i5 2.53GHz processor, and 4GB ram. I saw a video of someone with an HP Pavilion, on it he was able to dualboot win7 and OSX Leopard and showed how they each worked well with no problems.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi,

If you have read some threads whereby we create install media via usb sticks, the you should know that it works to boot a Mac OS of a external usb device. I myself have a usb/esata external for Mac OS Installation and testing partitions on it.

Firstly you would need a pc motherboard that has most compatibility with Mac Hardware -> http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.7.0

Then prepare your installation media and install onto your external usb device. ( advisable to disconnect all / any existing internal hard disk before running the install to prevent any wrong-doings.

Regards,
