ketsurui
NOTE: Currently, QE/CI, Ethernet, and Wifi are the things I know do not work. You can either replace your Wifi card with an Airport card, or simply add an Airport card to your WWAN slot (Method I'm using). If you have a solution for QE/CI and/or Ethernet, please let us all know and I will update this guide. Thanks! All necessary files: http://www.mediafire.com/?k4hm1d9m67p242p (~40MB) Step 1: Create an OSX Lion bootable flash drive (NOTE: You will need a Mac to create the bootable drive) 1. Acquire an OSX Lion InstallESD.dmg 2. On a Mac, insert your flash drive, and open disk utility. 3. Click on the drive in the left pane, and then click on the partition tab. 4. Click on Options, choose GUID Partition Table, and close. 5. Select 1 Partition, name the partition anything (it doesn't matter, because it will change shortly). 6. Choose Format type as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and click Apply. 7. Browse to and double-click the InstallESD.dmg to mount the image. 8. Open a Terminal, and enter the following command (without 's). 8a. 'open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/BaseSystem.dmg' 9. Go back to Disk Utility, and open the Restore tab. 10. For Source, select the Mac OS X Base System from the lower left pane. For destination, select the partition you created and named on the flash drive. 11. Once the restore is complete, open the newly restored partition in Finder, and browse to System/Installation. 12. Delete the shortcut titled Packages, and then create a new folder and name it Packages. 13. Open another Finder window, and browse to the Mac OS X Install ESD image that you previously mounted. 14. Open the Packages folder, and copy all files inside to the Packages folder you created on the restored flash drive. 15. Extract and run the Extra_Lion_DP4.pkg and install it to the flash drive (Be very careful. If you install this to your Mac's HDD, you may brick it). 16. Extract and run the Chamelion 2.0 RC5 installer and install it to the flash drive (Once again, be very careful not to install to the Mac's HDD). *If you run into issues with steps 15 or 16, and receive an error attemting to install either package (i.e. "cannot be installed on this drive"), eject the flash drive, and remount it and try the installer again. Also note that if it automatically skips the installation destination step, you can select Change Destination on the very last step prior to installation. Step 2: Hard Drive Preparation 1. Boot from Windows 7 install media. 2. When system boots to Windows 7 install welcome screen, hit Shift-F10 to enter command prompt. Enter the following commands (without 's). 2a. 'diskpart' (Starts the diskpart utility) 2b. 'list disk' (Lists drives in system. Locate the physical drive you plan on installing to, noted as [drive#]) 2c. 'select disk [drive#]' ex: 'select disk 0' 2d. 'clean' 2e. 'convert gpt' 2f. 'create partition efi size=200' (Forces creation of the EFI partition used by OSX) 2g. 'create partition primary size=[desired size for OSX partition in MB, for example, a 150GB would be entered 150000 (estimated)]' ex: 'create partition primary size=150000' 2h. 'create partition primary size=1' (This will create the Windows partition. Don't worry about the size). 2i. 'extend' (This will resize the Windows partition to fill the rest of the drive) 2j. 'format fs=ntfs quick' 2k. 'exit' 2l. 'exit' 3. Hit the X to close out the Windows install welcome screen. When the unit reboots, hold the power button to power off. Step 3: Lion installation 1. Insert your Lion bootable flash drive created in Step 1. 2. At the Dell post screen, hit F12, and boot from the USB removable device. 3. At the Chameleon boot menu, select Mac OS X Base System 4. Click the arrow at the Lion welcome screen. 5. Open the Utilities menu, and select Disk Utility. This is where the system gets picky. One of two things will have happened. You may see Disk Utility open and populate like normal. If so, continue. If you get the spinning beachball, return to Step 2 and repartition the HDD. I don't know why this happens, but it should be fine on the next attempt. Redo Step 2 until Disk Utility populates properly. (Yes, there are Terminal commands that can be used to move on without repartitioning, but it will cause the same beachball issue with Disk Utility once Lion is actually installed, which is no good). 6. Select the greyed out partition on the HDD (Should be about the size you designated for the Mac partition in Step 1). 7. Click the Erase tab, name the partition OSX for ease in future steps, for Format choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and Apply. 8. Close Disk Utility, and continue with the installation. (You will see two partitions, the Windows partition with a yellow exclamation, and the OSX partition. 9. When installation finishes, the system will reboot. When the system reboots, hold the power button to power off. 10. Power the unit back on, and at the Dell post screen, hit F12, and boot from the USB removable device. 11. At the Chameleon boot menu, select OSX. 12. Welcome to OSX. You will immediately need to connect a USB keyboard to get through the keyboard detection screen, even though your keyboard will work fine after. 13. Follow all prompts and you will now be on the Lion desktop. Step 4: Make your Lion installation bootable, and Lion Drivers Part 1 1. Run Chameleon 2.0 RC5 installer and install to Volume OSX. 2. Run #####, and choose the following options: 2a. Drivers & Bootloaders->Kexts & Enablers->Audio->Universal->VoodooHDA 0.2.72 2b. Drivers & Bootloaders->Kexts & Enablers->Miscellaneous->EvOreboot 2c. Drivers & Bootloaders->Kexts & Enablers->Miscellaneous->FakeSMC 2d. Customization->System Definitions->MacBook Pro->MacBookPro 6,1 3. After ##### finishes, DO NOT REBOOT, or you will need a USB keyboard and mouse for the next step. 4. Extract the two .kext files and .prefpane from the Trackpad.Synaptic-Gesture zip (You can place them on the desktop for ease). 5. Copy the .prefpane file to System/Library/PreferencePanes (Overwrite when prompted). 6. Use Kext Wizard to install the 2 kext files you extracted into System/Library/Extensions. 7. Reboot, all should be well, then shut down. (If you cannot boot to OSX, launch OSX with a -x switch, then reboot again). Step 5: Windows Installation 1. Boot from Windows 7 install media (I would HIGHLY suggest a SP1 slipstreamed or retail disc, as it prevents the complication of the SP1 install. If you don't have an SP1 disc, see Step 5a after completing Step 5. If you do have an SP1 disc, skip Step 5a). 2. DO NOT modify the partitions during installation. Doing so will prevent you from installing Windows, as the HDD is now a GPT partition table, which Windows can not be normally installed to. 3. Once installation is complete, feel free to install your drivers and updates like normal. Step 5a: Post-Windows Installation updates (SP1 Installation. Only follow this step if you installed from an SP0 disc). 1. After Windows is installed and reboots to the desktop, download the Windows 7 SP1 standalone installer (Both LAN and WLAN should work OOB). 2. Reboot the computer and boot from the Windows installation media. 3. When system boots to Windows 7 install welcome screen, hit Shift-F10 to enter command prompt. Enter the following commands (without 's). 3a. 'diskpart' (Starts the diskpart utility) 3b. 'select disk [drive#]' ([drive#] will be the same as you used in Step 2). 3c. 'select partition 3' (This will be accurate provided you followed Step 2 verbatim; otherwise, select the partition you installed Windows to). 3d. 'active' 3e. 'exit' 3f. 'exit' 4. Reboot. System will boot to Windows like normal. 5. Install SP1 and any remaining updates and drivers. Step 6: Make Your System Dualboot 1. Reboot the computer and boot from the Windows installation media. 2. 3c. 'select partition 2' (This will be accurate provided you followed Step 2 verbatim; otherwise, select the partition you installed OSX to). 3d. 'active' 3e. 'exit' 3f. 'exit' 3. Reboot. If system boots to Chameleon, you're all set and can move on to Step 7. If not, shut down, and then boot from your Lion bootable flash drive created in Step 1 and select OSX at the Chameleon boot menu. 4. Install Chameleon 2.0 RC5 and reboot. 5. System is now dualboot. Step 7: Lion Drivers Part 2 (Note: Once you complete this step, you are committed and can NOT play around with setting active disks. If you do, you will have to redo the ENTIRE process). 1. Boot to OSX. 2. Use KextWizard to install all of the ATI .kext (4) files. Copy the .bundle and .plugin files to System/Library/Extensions. 3. Copy 1002_9488.rom, com.apple.boot.plist, smbios.plist and dsdt.aml to Extra/ 4. Install Chameleon_2.0_RC5_r780_trunk_545vm_Shrike. 5. Reboot. (If you cannot boot to OSX, launch OSX with a -x switch, then reboot again). ketsurui
Download link has changed, as the original file had the improper ATI kexts. Somehow I managed to zip the unedited ones. If you have video issues, redownload the package! Sorry! Pasqualdo
Download link has changed, as the original file had the improper ATI kexts. Somehow I managed to zip the unedited ones. If you have video issues, redownload the package! Sorry! Dear Ketsurui, thanks for your nice guide. I would like to use it to install the ati kexts but mediafire reports that the file is missing, could you please post a new link? I used the usb stick method to install Lion, I had Ethernet and Audio working just by installing manually IONetworkingFamily.kext and the voodoo kext, nothing else was needed. Now, using ##### to install the kext that you suggested IONetworking does not work anymore. There must be some conflict with some stuff in the Extra folder.. ketsurui
Link is fixed. Seems that when I edited it the first time, the text changed, but the url didn't. Should work now. I'm not too sure why there would be a conflict with the networking. I tried manually installing it also, with no luck. I'll play around with it a bit more, and see if I can figure it out. While I'm here, I might add: If you go into the Preference Panel for Chameleon after installing the ATI files, you can force the resolution to 1920x1080 (assuming you have the HD screen as I do). Good luck. If you need help, lemme know! Pasqualdo
Hi, your method does not work for me, the card is not recognized. I can only get 1400x1050 by changing com.boot... By the way I found out that the Ethernet problem is due to the 64 bit flag. The kext is only working in 32 bits, I am currently looking for some kext that works in 64 bits... xxmaelstrom
Could this work with Vista as well? Also, I'm using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 and a Dell 0Y536R motherboard. AKennedy_4
Thanks for the guide, I am currently in the process of installing lion on my sxps 1645. Will post back with results. Could you explain more on how you got wifi working by using a airport card? AKennedy_4
Everything is working except the ATI card. I installed the kext, copied the bundles and plugins and all the other files to their respective locations. Any ideas? Im stuck at a really low resolution. Trying to force HD graphics through Chameleon doesn't work (Tried Graphics Mode =1920x1080x32). Any ideas would certainly be appreciated Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/265762-guide-for-dualbooting-lion-and-windows-7-on-a-dell-studio-xps-1645/#findComment-1744251 Share on other sites
xtrememenace
I was able to follow till step two, wherein i can see the chimera boot screen to select the Mac OS X base system and Windows 7 ntfs partition. But when i select Mac OS X, i can see many terminal commands being executed on screen and once it stops i see the beachball logo spinning endlessly. I redid the entire step 2 again, still it doesnt go past the spinning logo.. i didnt get the lion installer nor the option to click on disk utility, once i select the mac os x system from the chimera boot loader. mdshann
I can't get past the drive partitioning. I keep getting the beachball in disk utility after maybe 4-5 times repartitioning the drive. What is the cause of this? Should all my partitions be a certain size? I am using 200MB for the efi, 125GB for the OSX, and the rest of my 640GB for Windows (which I hope to split for ubuntu as well). Any ideas? I am going to try 150GB as you have and see what happens. Should a use boot and nuke for a few minutes to wipe out the beginning of the drive and try again? mdshann
OK, I used (from linux boot cd) dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M and let it run for 20 minutes, it wiped the first 2.6 GB of my drive. I then proceeded with diskpart, using 150GB instead of 125GB and now disk utility is working! So if you run into the same issue hopefully this helps. I am not sure if it was wiping the beginning of the drive or using the magic number of 150GB that fixed it though Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/265762-guide-for-dualbooting-lion-and-windows-7-on-a-dell-studio-xps-1645/#findComment-1820063 Share on other sites
