i think it's time to step up from LGA775. here's my plan and questions.

1. currently dual boot SL and Win7 on a GA-EP35-DS3L. heading for a GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3 or GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3, with i5 2500K. will i need to re-install SL and/or win7? or can i just re-configure my boot setup and dsdt for the new hardware?

2. spent lots of time trying to get an overclock on my E5200 cpu, but i could never get it to boot with dsdt - it kept hanging, looking for ssdt files that i didn't have. i see posts here that suggest that people are running overclocked 2500K hacks... can someone chime in on how they did this, and whether they have any issues with sleep, time machine, etc.? i'd love to take advantage of the 2500K's potential if the hack can still behave "normally".

3. not quite the forum for this but it i see lots of posts with the Asus P67 sabertooth. should i re-consider my gigabyte plans? basically i am going off the build recommendations i saw at tonymac, and googling a LOT on the 2 mobos i am looking at.

as always, all comments, help and info appreciated. i've learned a lot from you guys, and as you know learning is a lifelong process :) third hack this will be and i could not have done any of them without you all.

Hi

It is possible to just move your systems to new mobo, but you need the DSDT for the new mobo, and also to get the new LGA1155 socket CPU's running you'll need the SMBIOS.plist for iMac 12,1. After that OS X should be able to run on your new system. Also you may need to get another sound kext, if your sound isn't enabled through DSDT.

I think you need to reinstall Windows 7, but try your luck. I know that I can install Windows XP on a mobo with the same CPU socket as my new mobo, and just switch over the harddrive, but I don't know if this works in Windows 7, with to diffferent CPU sockets.

thank you for the info, good tip on the imac 12,1 - right now i'm set up as mac pro 3,1 and wouldn't have thought to change it.

win7 reinstall is a bummer but not the end of the world - maybe i'll take the time do do the SP1 update at the same time while it's blessed for booting.

i'll post an update on progress as i get things going. ;)

i guess it's time to ask this one more question:

knowing that i am running a 460 GTX and i will be better served upgrading to Lion, should i first update this machine to Lion before making the move, or would it be best to wait until after?

Well i've mooted the SL vs Lion question. I put Lion on my laptop, and then did the hack. used xmove, no issues with the install. updated to 10.1 and did the rollback on HDA... all went fine.

discovered on a sleep and restart that i had the cmos reset issue but i had read the headline here before, one quick search to discover current workaround. 5 minutes later, fixed. this place is amazing.

one tiniest issue - auto-sleep is not working. every other kind of sleep/wake is fine. i recall it was there with SL but i didn't ever look into it, usually i put a machine to sleep when i leave it. but i think i would like to try to fix it, can anyone offer suggestions?
