I've tried searching everywhere, so please, exuse the n00bish question :)

How do you and what is booting into OS X "with the -f switch"

thanks!

Press F8 during boot (be quick) then you are in the darwin bootloader. Type ? to see all bootoptions.

Example:

qemu7tk.th.jpg

When you are booting up, first the screen turns black and then grey. Right when the screen turns black, start tapping the F8 key repeatedly and quickly until a command prompt appears. Type -f at the prompt.

-f forces the kext cache to be rebuilt during the boot

-x is safe mode - you still have a GUI but a lot of things are disabled

-s is single user mode - it is a command prompt environment

-v is verbose mode - it displays messages (and errors) of what is happening during the boot
