What kind of 3D are you after?

Parts? Assemblies? Simple Rendering (Animation/shots)? Something industry compatable? Something easy? Something expensive? Something cheap? Something free? Do you want 2d as well? .... I know of many applications....

Personally, if you're talking about parametric solid modeling, I'd say screw the OSX alternatives... (IMO, the suck) pick-up (1)NX4 or (2)Pro/E 3.0 ; hell even (3)Solidworks. 1,2,3 ; that's my order of preference.

If not, then there are TONS of options, most of which are pretty decent. Simply google it.

lightwave 3d (i love this, but thats because its the first 3d app i learnt)

if i were to pick an app to start with and get into it would be maya. it looks very slick and neat.

Both are available for mac but cost a bit too much unless you get student licenses.

Maya/ 3dsmax.... everything else is just a toy

unfortunately, blender just doesn't cut it if you are going to get serious. i like to call myself a proffesional when it comes to 3d (worked on a couple of games and have worked on commercial advertising material) and i can guarantee that the first 3d app you use will become your benchmark, and when you work in another application you will compare to how it does things based on your benchmark.

for example, when i work in 3ds max, instead of my work process coming naturally i think "how would i do this in lightwave, now where are those tools here..."

try and get hold of a really good application to learn in, and then try and use free software afterwards. i would advise looking for a slightly older version of your selected software on a cover disc, or find someone near you that can let you have a go on the software.

you can download a personal learning edition trial version of maya here:

and I know that lightwave and maya are available for mac (i have them, but its really only ppc at the moment). i dont know where 3ds max is going, but with maya and 3ds max both now being owned by autodesk i think one may slowly fade into the other.

i just reread this thread, and kiko mentioned z-brush, its more of a 2.5d modelling program, not really 3d but i have mucho respect for anyone who is half decent at it because what you can create in that is awsome. I can't get my head around it tho.
