After many frustrating hours and kernel panics, I used these steps to install the 10.6.8 update on a clean os x install and was able to enable the following features of my hardware:

- USB 3.0

- Bluetooth

- Audio

- Accelerated graphics (Radeon HD 5850)

- Onboard Intel gigabit lan

- Proper detection of SATA controllers

- Firewire (I haven't tested)

** Did not attempt to enable sleep functions.

I have cobbled this guide together from other posts on the forum, credit goes to those authors, you know who you are. Also a big Thank You! to Andy for supporting the ASUS hardware so well.

Prerequisites:

Andy's Boot CD 5.0; AndyBoot V5.0

Retail Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVD (or earlier Snow Leopard DVD)

Mac OS X 10.6.8 Combo Update; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

##### 3.7.3; http://www.tonymacx86.com/1010110101/#####-3.7.3.zip

Preliminary Steps:

1. Download everything in the prerequisites put it on some accessible media like a USB flash drive.

2. Burn Andy's Boot CD 5.0 onto a CD.

3. Turn off your computer.

Installation Steps:

1. Unplug every other drive from your system minus the DVD drive and the target installation hard drive.

2. Spam the delete key to get into the BIOS.

3. Using UEFI or BIOS change your boot order to DVD drive first, then your HDD second.

4. Save UEFI or BIOS settings and reboot.

5. Pop in Andy's Boot CD and make sure your computer boots off of it.

6. Wait for the bootloader to finish loading.

7. Once your are at the Andy bootloader screen remove the Boot CD.

8. Pop in your retail OS X installation DVD.

9. Wait for the light on the drive to go out.

10. Press F5 (or spam it).

11. Once the Mac OS X Installation DVD appears navigate (using your arrow keys) to it and hit "Enter".

12. Wait for OS X to load.

13. Once you see the installation screen go to the top and hit "Utilities" and then "Disk Utility".

14. Format your HDD to Mac OS X Journaled (Extended) [partition it however you like].

15. Once that's done close "Disk Utility".

16. Continue the installation of OS X (this takes nearly 30 minutes depending on your hardware and what you are installing).

17. Eat popcorn, walk the dog, leave your computer, w/e but make sure to check back every so often.

18. Once the installation finishes and it asks you to reboot remove the OS X installation DVD and insert Andy's Boot CD again.

19. Reboot.

20. Let it boot off the Boot CD again and select your OS X drive (your hard drive) once the bootloader appears.

21. Finish the installation (we’re almost there!).

Post-Installation Steps:

1. Log in into your newly installed Hackintosh!

2. Copy ##### to your desktop.

3. Copy the 10.6.8 update to your desktop, don't run it yet!

To prevent Kernel Panics! when updating to Mac OS X 10.6.8:

a. Remove the "ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext" file from /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins

b. In Terminal, type: sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

c. Rebuild kext cache and permissions using the "kext Utility" on Andy's Boot CD (double click to run).

4. Reboot and use the Boot CD again and select your OS X drive (your hard drive) once the bootloader appears.

5. Run the 10.6.8 combo update (hopefully no panics or errors), DO NOT restart yet! minimise the window when processing finishes.

6. Run Andy's P8P67 Pro Package from the CD (it is on the Andy's Boot CD), it didn't seem to work if copied to the desktop.

7. Restart and remove Andy's boot cd.

8. Let the system boot from your hard disk.

9. Almost there...

HD Audio (for some reason mine did not work out of the gate):

1. Run ##### from your desktop.

2. Select "AppleHDA Rollback" under drivers&bootladers->Kexts&Enablers->Audio->Realtek ALC8xx

3. click continue and install

4. Under you applications menu run the "kext utility" to rebuild cache and permissions.

5. restart your system.

Enhanced Graphics (DVD player, etc.):

If you have a graphics card which is supported by the kernel you may try to enable accelerated graphics.

1. Go to /Extra folder and drag the com.apple.Boot.plist file to the desktop. Using TextEdit, edit the string value for GraphicsEnabler as follows:

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>

<string>Yes</string>

2. Copy the edited file back to the /Extra folder, replacing the existing file. this will require you to authenticate.

3. restart.

4. Try running the DVD player, if successful it should now work without error.

Sadly, with both Radeon 5870 and 6850 video cards, running Andy's P8P76 Pro package renders the computer unbootable: I get to the grey Apple screen with the twirling circle below it, and after a few seconds, the circle freezes and the computer just sits there. Sigh.

That is a bummer...

I would think that the 5870 and the 5850(works on my system) are similar in architecture and should work without many headaches.

According to this link the 5870 is natively supported http://www.chiphazard.com/2011/03/24/mac-o...ew-imac-lineup/

I am not a hackintosh expert but you may be able to get some help in the graphics sub forum.

Try booting the system in verbose mode so you can see the startup sequence output and take a picture once it hangs, and post it along with your exact system specs. Someone out there may have seen the scenario before.

Cheers and good luck
