makosx
My card is death. I got a Quadro FX 3700 512 MB. My question is, is it possible to change my model by a Quadro FX 4000 for Mac, in the same machine (pc, ASUS P6T Intel i7 920)? Both have similar prices, and I think the new FX 4000 for Mac could have best compatibility with OSX 10.6.7. Maybe total compatibility. Gringo Vermelho
The Quadro FX 4000 does not work with 10.6.7 until you install the Quadro drivers from Nvidia. Read the release notes on the driver download page for more information. Why would you want to use a ridiculously overpriced video card like that when you can just use a PC video card? Read this review before spending.. *gasp* 1200 dollars..Apparently the FX 4000 is not all that hot, for example it is plagued by the same mysterious crashes and freezes as the GTX 460 are..on hackintoshes.. but this is on a real Mac. Hopefully they will sell enough of them...to people who don't read reviews...so that they can afford better testing. http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/...ising-start.ars Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/258629-quadro-fx-4000-for-mac/#findComment-1693741 Share on other sites
makosx
Thanx Gringo. I just was askining it, cause I do not know anything on hardware. The technician that supports me propose me to change my old and death card by a Quadro FX 3800 1GB Because it seems that this card is not made now, the 3700, and I would like to take advantage the moment to buy a card of similar price and better presentations to 3d software and HD video edition if it possible. If you must to do the change, Which would be your option? (Sorry for bad english) And Thanx again. Gringo Vermelho
For a Hackintosh I guess that would be a Geforce GTX 285. It has solid driver support, it performs according to specs and all features work. Fermi architecture cards (GTX 4xx, 5xx) rule on Windows but they don't perform well on OS X. To give you an idea, my 9800 GTX+ was just as fast as my new GTX 460 is on OS X. In some cases (Cinebench) it was even slightly faster. In fact, the GTX 460 only beats the 9800GTX+ in CUDA and OpenCL tests! This is not only my experience, or bad configuration - you will find other users here and elsewhere saying the same thing if you look around and research a bit. If you do some work in Windows as well you might want to look at the GTX 480. It will probably perform about the same as the GTX 285 (possibly worse) on OS X while doing "ordinary" stuff, but it will be faster than the 285 when working with apps that can use CUDA or OpenCL. But...if you're like me, with the GTX 480 you will have that lingering feeling that you're not really getting what you paid for. You should definitely look at AMD/ATI video cards as well before buying anything. Hopefully somebody who knows more about ATI cards will chime in. makosx
Thank you. My provider tell me about Asus GTX 580 and I have read something on nvidia retail mac drivers 256 which might have the necessary ones to give support to this series 5xx. He cannot sell me the GTX 285 you're talking about, and others he told are 560, and 570. I need to use software like Cinema 4D (3d app), After Effects, or FCP and Logic Studio, and need a full functionality card in 10.6.7 and 10.7 (I hope). Some people says that there isn't driver for 5xx series, other taht yes. I'm confused... Gringo Vermelho
Those are amazing video cards, on Windows. It sounds like your provider doesn't know anything about using them in a Mac or a Hackintosh. Read this and draw your own conclusions. Also follow the links posted on page two of the thread. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=245540 Personally I would not buy a 5xx for professional use on a Hackintosh. makosx
Ok, Tahnk you. I did it anyway, after to have read some reviews about this card, the 580, incluiding that you say. I'm conscious that at the moment, this card don't match 100% in OSX, but I believe that it will do soon. I now got it. Not Q acceleration yet, but everything ok with new Nvidia drivers for mac. Can't edit 1080p for now, but I trust I will soon than later, and I have to say, the card is amazing quiet and fast than mine before, even without acceleration. In any case, thanx very much for your warning. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/258629-quadro-fx-4000-for-mac/#findComment-1695577 Share on other sites
