So, I bought the retail Mac OS X Snow Leopard disk from Best Buy today. I was excited because I wanted to put it on my Inspiron 1545. I got home and have spent over four hours trying to get it to work. I get the same error every time. "appleyukon2: rxringsize<= 1024, txringsize 256, rx_max_le 1024, tx_max_le 768, st_max_le 3328" followed by "wl0: Broadcom BCM4315 802.11 Wireless Controller 5.10.91.19" then the infamous still waiting for root device hang. I've tried 4 different boot disks (the 3 versions of boot 132 and snowboot) but I get the same error. ANY help at all would be amazing!

As a boot CD, try Nawcom ModCD. (Google it)

Go into BIOS and set the drives to AHCI, if you can. If that doesn't work, try setting them to IDE/Compatible, if you can.

The AppleYukon and Broadcom messages are not errors, just information. The prolem is the waiting root device which means that the driver for the hard drives is not loading.

There is a posting of someone installing the iAtkos v7 distro.

Ok so I had everything working PERFECTLY... Then I updated on accident and I got a dumb kernel panic. So I'm in the process of reinstalling it, but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. What can I do?

It will take some time, but I suggest you read through every posting in that thread for installing on the Dell 1545. There are improvements and hints throughout. For instance, the last posting as of right this minute has an improvement for video. ( http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1666560 )

Anyway, one of the Extensions (kexts) that you install during the initial installation is incompatible with the latest versions of OSX and that kext needs to be removed. You can remove it before updating or if you forget, you can remove it after updating. The bad kext is SleepEnabler.kext. Go remove it right now. Otherwise, read this posting from the thread:

Ok one more problem now. (btw thanks rlf) My whole hard drive is GPT format and I just was informed Windows 7 can't install on a GPT formatted hdd. What the :) am I supposed to do now. I was so excited to have an awesome Windows 7 dual boot Snow Leopard system but the dream seems to be slowly fading. One thing I've figured out is that I can create a hybrid MBR/GPT system, but I am dumbfounded as to how to make one. If you know of, or could write, a very detailed guide on how to dual boot using the hybrid method, I would appreciate it fully!

Download and read this guide, it might help: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/222155/Snow%20Leop...%20v1.1.pdf.zip

Ok one more problem. Chameleon failed so I installed Windows, installed EasyBCD and added a boot entry for Mac. I can almost successfully dual boot but I get a kernel panic when I don't boot into safe mode. It talks about apple intel cpu power management and something to do with that. I figure since I can boot into safe mode that it must be a kext. Any ideas?

EDIT: It boots with the cd, but i get the error "can't find mach_kernel" when booting from the hard drive.

EDIT2: I used ShowAllFiles and saw that mach_kernel is infact on the Mac partition.

AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext manages the power on your laptop. You can remove it or install another kext to block it, but then you will have no battery control and you will burn your power up faster.

I previously suggested reading ALL of the install guide thread for tips. There are tips in there about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Go to that thread and read postings: 344, 346, 349, 338 and 339. Posting 339 is a revised installation procedure to deal with OSX updated to 10.6.5 and beyond. It involves a different set of extensions that, among other things, deals with the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext problem.

The dual boot guide I pointed to refers to another guide about installing Chameleon. It says to follow the "Part 3 - Install Chameleon" guide except substitute a couple of steps. The Part 3 guide for installing Chameleon is here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/222155/Snow%20Leop...0v1.2.2.pdf.zip

If "booting from the hard drive" means that you are booting with EasyBCD, then if the entry for OSX is wrong, it will be looking at the wrong partition and that is why it can't find the mach_kernel - that is my guess - I've never used EasyBCD.
