Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L rev 2.4 and audio

I have a new GA-G31M_ES2L (rev 2.4) - and in typical Gigabyte fashion, the actual board specs have changed compared to what I supposedly purchased- yay!

I have everything working except audio (once I get the audio working with this, I plan on posting a VERY detailed guide for this particular board-- since it appears to be the biggest-selling LGA775 board at newegg for Gigabyte fans).

The codec on this board, while supposedly an ALC883, is actually an ALC888b. OSX profiler sees it as "ID 887".

Here's the weird bit: When I install (via #####) OSX Retail 10.6.3, I *get* audio. It works, and all the outputs and inputs are shown, and it sounds great. So--- I know this is doable moving forward.... at least it SHOULD be..

But as soon as I complete the Combo update to 10.6.7, my audio functionality vanishes. The system 'profiler' sees it, but under the sound/audio properties, there's no devices. No output devices found, no input devices.

Here's what I've tried:

AppleHDA: I've tried the AppleHDA Rollback, I've tried AppleHDA8xxx, I've even tried setting aside the AppleHDA from my 10.6.3 working install-- but under 10.6.7, nothing. No devices, period.

VooDooHDA: While this "works" in a most basic sense, the audio is SO poor and hissy that it's unusable. Really bad.

AppleAzalia: This works, and generates GREAT sound-- but this is only a partial solution, as I get audio playback (output) only-- no input devices are recognized.

I am dying to get the audio working for this, and I am pretty sure there are a LOT of G31M-ES2L users out there (various revisions, of course, but..). Rev 2.4 is what's shipping today. I am also reasonably certain that the AppleHDA method is the way to go, but I'm stuck....

I'd be quite happy to reload back to 10.6.3 (default), and dump/copy/whatever is there if anyone here is willing to help me out? I'm sure there's info in that setup that will help.

If anyone has ideas, pointers, tips for this situation, I'm willing to try anything.

Thanks!

Try rolling back to 10.6.2 AppleHDA, the newer ones need to be bin patched. As far as I know ##### + ##### uses 1062.

Oh geez. So, you're saying there's MULTIPLE 10.6.2 AppleHDA's out there? I thought that the "AppleHDA 10.6.2 Rollback" implied rolling back to an unpatched works-for-most HDA.

But I guess I can see that my board might need a tweaked one.. Where's the best place to find them? (kexts.com, or..?). I'm of course willing to try whatever I can. :-)

I have *the exact same* issue!

I was using iATKOS 10.6.3 and RealTek ALC883 installer and it was working like a charm. The AppleAzaliaAudio.kext was working smooth. I decided to format my pc thinking that this would work the same way in 10.6.6. Installed the Hazard distro and found nVidia card working, AtherosL1Cethernet working. But try as I may, I could not get the audio to work. I tried installing

1. VoodooHDA (I get 4 digital HDMI output ports, but the sound output is mute. Tried editing the kext, to no avail)

2. AppleHDA + HDAEnabler - Got kernel panic.

3. RealTekALC883 installer - Not working.

I don't understand this. If something was working in 10.6.3, what prevents it to work in 10.6.6? I need Xcode 4 for my work and I am forced to stick with this :)

Today i found the solution!!!

Same card (GA-G31M-ES2L rev 2.4 with ALC888b).

I use the MaLdOn method to install 10.6.7

Patch DSDT with DSDT Auto-Patcher (GA-G31M-ES2L + HDEF_Gigabyte ALC88B)

HDA rollback with ##### from tonymacx86.

AND this Kext in extra/extention: GigabyteALC888b.kext

I found it on tonymac's forum, i don't know who wrote it but really thanks a lot. No other solution woks really.

May I have a copy of your DSDT.aml please. A friend of mine needs it. Thanks.
