javed13
Hey folks, I recently converted an old Inspiron 530. I was initially happy about the install so the 1024x768 resolution did not bother me one bit but I have a 16:9 monitor that I would like to use with this setup. I searched and did not see a way to force a 16:9 resolution that worked on this system so I am looking for a video card. The only thing is that I was hoping to get a video card that works out of the box because I don't want to risk any kernal errors since this system is all set up for my daily use and I don't want to lose everything and have to start all over. Is there any video card be capable of this? Just pop it into the PCI-e slot and boot it up? My understanding is that compatible Nvidia cards have the best chance. I see some Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT/GTX cards on eBay going for < $40. Would that be a good way to go? Thanks in advance for any replies. ---------------------- System/Install info I used iAtkos S3 V2 to get Snow Leopard on an old Inspiron 530. I eventually got it to work after choosing the right items under customization. I then used the Apple 10.6.7 update to get it to 10.6.7. The system does not have a video card and so I am using the on board video which was just listed as an Intel® G33/G31 Express Chipset Family under device manager before the install. Dell Inspiron 530 Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Quad Core 2 Duo (Q6600) RAM: 3GB Video: On Board Audio, networking, on board video all work. Sleep does not(I haven't bothered trying to fix this). My only gripe with anything other than the video is that I have to go to system preferences --> VoodooHDA everytime I restart to lower the input gain due to the fact my speakers hiss if I don't. After restart, input gain always resets to a higher setting. javed13
Nvidia + Nvenabler for the win Thanks for the reply. So do I use a kext utility to install Nvenabler. Then shut off my computer, plug in the video card and turn it back on? Is it that simple? rrprime
Yes, if you have a mpkg the it will install by itself but most likely it will be a kext just copy in S/L/E repair permissions shut down install new video card and reboot and it should work just fine Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/256462-video-card-suggestion-for-dell-inspiron-530/#findComment-1680665 Share on other sites

I installed NVenabler. Repaired permissions via disk utility. When I reboot, I get stuck at a blue screen. I can only launch back into via safe mode. I did nothing else except install those kexts. Any idea what is happening? EDIT: I logged in via safe mode. Removed the old kext. Downloaded it again from another source. This time I used Kext Utility to install NVenabler & NVinject. Rebooted. Works like a charm. Running on 1600x1050. Thanks!
