sacarmic
IS there any type of idiots guide to get the nVidia GTX 260/275/285 cards (short of buying on ebay) to work in my hackintosh. I am using the one configured and setup on Lifehacker with the gigabyte motherboard. I've read a lot of posts, but am VERY confused as to how they got them working. Thanks for any advice you might have! Scott Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/255412-idiots-guide-to-nvidia-gtx/ Share on other sites

If you have a semi working Hackintosh you can use it to prepare the USB flash drive using instructions from Lifehacker and Nawcom. I used the Nawcom ModUSB and my GTX 260 worked OoTB. You can check out my install instructions HERE. sacarmic
Please be more specific, what's the problem? None, really ,I just want to make sure I buy the correct card and do the correct steps before I install and not screw anything up. Scott Yes, you need to be specific when you post. I would like to replace it with a GTX285 card. Can I use a straight PC card, or do I have to flash the ROM in the card to mac it work with the EFI I am currently using? IS that enough info? Gringo Vermelho
The GTX 285 *should* work in the same way that you have the 9800GTX+ working now (no flashing needed). GraphicsEnabler=y, maybe PCIRoot=1, this is necessary on many Gigabyte boards. If you're using a device-properties string for your 9800GTX+ it will probably continue working with that string, but it will be injected as a 9800GTX+ with the same amount of memory etc etc. You could probably redo the device properties string by converting it back to xml, manually change the properties so that they match with the 285 and then convert it back to hex again. Use gfxutil (google it). Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/255412-idiots-guide-to-nvidia-gtx/#findComment-1673559 Share on other sites
sacarmic
So are you recommending me get a regular pc GTX card or should I buy on e that has been flashed to work in a mac pro? Gringo Vermelho
It will work but it's a waste of money. Just use a PC video card. Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/255412-idiots-guide-to-nvidia-gtx/#findComment-1673947 Share on other sites
sacarmic
Hi everyone. So I got the card installed and it seems to be working, but how can I be sure it is utilizing the card completely? One reason I ask is even though the card has 1GB vram, it inly seems 500MB. Below are the screen captures from System Profiler: Thanks again for all of everyones help Scott If it matters, I did install the latest GTX 285 drivers from the nvidia website. Thanks, Scott Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/255412-idiots-guide-to-nvidia-gtx/#findComment-1681502 Share on other sites
Gringo Vermelho
That's because you're still using the DSDT injection code from your old video card. The amount of RAM is hardcoded there. O.K., how would I co about changing that? Also does everything else look o.k.? I need to get it so Premiere recognizes it as a Mercury supported card. Should the chipset read properly as the GTX 285 or does that matter? Thanks again for all your help! sacarmic
I just used the installer that was created for the lifehacker hackintosh build. O.K., all seems to be working, but I'm still looking for info on how to edit the dsdt so it sees all the VRAM. Thanks!
