The basic principle is as follows:

 

- first, you perform a time-machine backup to an external HD

- then, you install a fresh copy of OS 10.6, creating a generic administrator user

- finally, you run Migration Assistant to bring back all your prior data (e.g. user home folder, preferences, etc).

 

Of note, some incompatibilities will be picked-up by the Assistant and will not install. There will also be some glitches (can't be more specific, I'm afraid).

 

The Mac OS Installer option to "upgrade" is very problematic, although I've managed to do just that when migrating to Snow Leopard...
