I have a HP Pavilion dv4217 (SSE2) with OS X 10.5.8 on it and now I want to upgrade (and keep all of my data) to any version of Snow Leopard (Preferably 10.6.6). I have no clue where or how to get started. Can anyone help?

The basic principle is as follows:

- first, you perform a time-machine backup to an external HD

- then, you install a fresh copy of OS 10.6, creating a generic administrator user

- finally, you run Migration Assistant to bring back all your prior data (e.g. user home folder, preferences, etc).

Of note, some incompatibilities will be picked-up by the Assistant and will not install. There will also be some glitches (can't be more specific, I'm afraid).

The Mac OS Installer option to "upgrade" is very problematic, although I've managed to do just that when migrating to Snow Leopard...
