I believe the above is correct, however for some hp laptops you can replace the internal card and do some work to the antennae if you still want to go internal (Link here to zipped PDF with explanation and instructions). Otherwise, like mulcyber said, you have to go external... just buy something small and you won't even notice its there. Probably you should look at USB Wi-Fi adapter with Ralink chipset.
