neube Posted March 17, 2011 Share Posted March 17, 2011 First off the System: AMD Athlon 64x2 3800+ Foxconn NF4SK8AA-8EKRS 939 socket Realtek ALC 850 (AC97 interface) Galaxy GTX460 768mb 3GB ram Procedure: Used this guide to the letter to begin with: guide from another user Had no audio and GPU wasn't recognized. 1024x768 rez only. Then I used TonyMac's guide to download/install 10.6.6, used the new AMD legacy kernel posted on this site and installed chamelon v2.0 rc5 using [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] before restarting to finish 10.6.6 upgrade. (I wouldn't have upgraded if the NVidia drivers for GTX460 didn't require 10.6.5+) After upgrade, still no audio, no gpu support (1024x786 etc). Installed ALC 850 (ac97) kext, audio works just fine (haven't tried digital out) Added PCIRootUID=1 to options using [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]. Graphics card is now recognized properly and all supported resolutions are available, audio, ethernet, and all USB's (front and back) work just fine. Installed elliottforcelegacyrtc from [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] to correct CMOS checksum error. Installed fix from [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] to correct failure to restart properly, can't recall what it's called, it's right next to the CMOS fix in the [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] menus. Problems: I'm on my pc right now because I'm getting double-panics (invalid kernal ip) at random intervals when doing completely random things; drop down menus, closing a program, doing nothing, etc. and never the same thing twice. Shutdown doesn't completely shut the computer down completely, I have to press the main power to turn off after the OS is done doing it's thing. "About This Mac" crashes the desktop, but it comes back. System Profiler shows Core Duo instead of X2 3800+ @ 2.01ghz and 3GB ram which are both correct (other than the Core Duo part), but the Bus Speed shows as 100mhz. Marvin's AMD Utility refuses to start, apparently this is just how it is with 10.6.6 + AMD at the moment. When logging back into XP the time is wrong. Otherwise, the system boots properly (takes about 1min45sec for it to boot from Chameleon selection) and graphics seem quick on desktop animations and videos (I'm going to try WoW when I can stop getting kernel panics). I'm wondering if it could be the fact that I can't patch cpuid's is the reason I'm getting random panics. If I were to reinstall and use Marvins AMD Utilty before upgrading to 10.6.6 would it make any difference? Obviously I can't considering my post was basically framed as a question. I did, however, find a patched version of the amd utility here on the forums, but it doesn't find any cpuid's to patch and the program freezes after searching and generating a log on the desktop. I haven't changed anything on my osx install since my original post, but now when the system locks it doesn't show any panics on the screen, it just locks up and I have to hard reset. I'm still under the assumption that it's my GTX460 causing the problems since I never got panics when using my 9800gt, but I was using 10.5 at that time. If you don't have a video card that has to have snow 10.6.5+, then I'd say just go with ideneb 10.5 variant and be happy you've got it working on an amd machine Otherwise, maybe one of these skilled experts will chime in or nvidia will throw us a bone.
